Pho

Slow, forgetful, lamentable service, but food is sort of ok. On no accounts queue (you cant book). No longer trying, apart from in a bad way. Been there 4 times, not going back.

The Tin Drum - Kemptown

Real mixed feelings about this place. I love its location in the summer with the windows open on a Sunday afternoon. There is always something interesting to look out on in St James Street. Lots of laptop users at most time of the day.

The food is generally ok - I have had great steak here and the roasts are the genuine article. They have started producing their own food from a small holding. There are generally some decent wines on. The deserts are not worth bothering with - the clotted cream is actually whipped squirty cream. Not badly priced, 2 people 3 courses with wine/beer about £50.00 including service.

But and it is a big but - the service is sometimes dreadful, and quite honestly you can pay to be ignored in many Brighton eateries so why bother coming here. However, some of their team are really great, but sometimes they are more interested in talking to each other.

Maybe removing the automatic addition of service would help...

Give it a try though.........

Fishy Fishy

Well it is new, so four of us tried it out on a sunny monday afternoon. It was fairly busy, but no where near full. The waitress was great, but it was very slow which was what we were after Our Oyster pre stater took a long long time. The starters were good, mains very good and then we were full.

It will be worth waiting a little longer for them to iron out their kitchen, but we all throught a promising start.

L'Eglise

We found the reviews below to be spot on – atmosphere, food, service all super and the total bill was 50% of other perhaps better known Brighton / Hove restaurants. We were there for the evening menu, three courses, copious wine etc and went home very happy with our night.

Pomegranate

We love this place. The food is great and very tasty. The service is slightly amateurish, but you just do not care as the food is so good. Starters and mains are very reasonably priced and the restaurant is small and intimate. Most importantly this place does not pretend to be something it isn’t – it’s all about the food, which they are justifiably proud of.

Due South

This is now off the boil. Our party of 5 went last night and overall there were some good bits but for a very hefty bill there are now much better in Brighton.

We got off to a bad start by being put into their “private dining” area – which is a table at the back where all you can hear are people dining above you. It is cold and there is a naff screen, which attempts to draw your eye from the queue to the toilets (incidentally dirty and blocked later). Something you should be made aware of at the time of booking – especially as you have to give a credit card in advance.

The credit crunch is alive as the portions are now so small and quality is not what it was. My special was a joke – the claw crackers arrived for three tiny langoustine claws.

The main menu is now mainly fish with the exception of partridge – most of us had the special of fillet steak. It was lovely, but too small for £25 a pop, one was well done when it should have been medium rare.

Wine was ok, but it really irritates me when new bottles are put into the same used wine glasses before they are empty.

We have eaten at Due South many times, and most times it is ok, but we came away feeling cheated and resentful at the money. We joked as we walked past Burger King that we could have done with one. You can get bigger portions, better quality with nicer atmosphere and service elsewhere.
