Tootsies

Great burgers and service.

Having only had previous experience of Tootsies in Wimbledon I was very happy to see that they continue to provide a good experience. The Brighton restaurant is considerably larger than I had expected, with an extensive indoor area as well as a large patio at the front. Possibly the best burgers in Brighton, served by cheerful & friendly staff.

Recommended.

Pompoko

Another one of Brighton's unsung gems, Pompoko is a very worthwhile visit. Always manned by cheerful, attentive & helpful waiting staff, the food is good, honest, quick, & tasty, served in surroundings which I imagine might equate to a Japanese version of a bistro. If you're ever in the vicinity of the Dome then look across the road & there it is.

Orders are taken at the counter, food delivered to your table.

Blue Man North African Bistro

A good ambience with friendly, attentive service, an interesting menu, & comfortable décor mark this restaurant as one of Brighton's gems.

Good food was quickly served at our table by an amiable & enthusiastic waiter, & our party of four had an excellent evening.

It's worth mentioning that those on a shoestring budget, or conversely those with a slightly grander than normal taste in wine are welcome to bring bottles from their own cellar which will be opened for minimal corkage.

Recommended for relaxed get-togethers or intimate evenings.

The House

Superficially appealing, House has some unfortunate & very basic shortcomings like bent cutlery, dirty wine glasses, paper serviettes, & poor cooking.

Uncleaned mussels were served in the moules mariniere, a quarter or more of which were closed-shelled & therefore inedible. The sauce was a watery disappointment, devoid of parsley & possibly even wine. When I explained to the waitress that I'd finished with my bowl of mussels because they hadn't been cleaned I was met with disinterest & no explanation or apology.

The main course was a mediocre rendition of steak au poivre (their 'Peppered Fillet Steak') cooked medium but which I requested blue. We didn't remain for puddings or coffee.

West End prices for poor to mediocre fare which, for my 40th birthday meal, was a startling let down. I couldn't possibly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
