Piero's review by Mr Cook
I was intrigued to visit this restaurant after reading the many positive reviews on this site and its continuing appearance at the number 1 spot in the top ten lists.
However, I have to say that my experience makes me question the validity of this site and I suspect that many of these reviews are not in fact genuine and I would advise all to err caution when reading any reviews posted here. My experience of Pieros:
I booked a table on a Friday evening at 7.30 expecting the place to be busy, instead it was empty and we were the only diners until 9pm when a hen party arrived. The waitress was very friendly and helpful and the decor despite being very 70s felt cosy, but more like your Gran’s flat rather than an Italian Bistro.
The menu selection was wide but nothing inspiring, again typical 1970s dishes. We both ordered a starter; I went with the waitresses’ recommendation of squid and chose a sirloin steak. My girlfriend opted for a corn on the cob followed by a pasta dish.
I did enjoy my generous starter however my girlfriend’s corn was hot in one part but stone cold on another. I could not believe this but it was obvious that it had been microwaved. The waitress apologised and explained that perhaps the chef had not turned it properly under the grill. I was staggered as she took it away and could hear the beeps of the microwave in the empty restaurant before she returned the same semi-eaten corn warning that it might be too hot to eat immediately. Very disappointing and off-putting.
My steak was cooked to my requirements (black and blue) however the meat quality was poor, very fatty and the accompanying vegetables were certainly reheated with the roast potatoes having that distinctive flavour formed from reheating and/or defrosting.
However, the worst part of the meal was my girlfriend’s main course which had a distinctive unusual flavour which we could not immediately place. She could not eat it and when I tried it I agreed it was unusual. However, by this point I felt uncomfortable with the waitress standing nearby and the total silence in the restaurant so we asked for the bill and left as the hen party were seated.
