Nooris Indian Restaurant review by Carl28
Being Avid curry fans, my friends and i like to sample as many of the local curry houses as we can.
Central Brighton is not exactly abunant with curry houses, and wanting to spend the night out on the town, we opted for our first visit to Nooris. Having had a bad experience at the Ashoka in hove (very bland food), trying new places has made me very wary, theres nothing worse than anticipating a decent curry and feeling cheated when its not delivered.
We first visited Nooris back in December. Quite old school in the decor, but well situated, the place has more of a 'curry house' feel, than a lot of the more contemporary places that are springing up. Its rather dimly lit, but it creates a good atmosphere. Once seated, Nooris customers are treated to free puppodums (one each) which is a nice touch, theres no free accompaniments, they have to be ordered separately. If you do opt for them, you are brought a lot more than the standard mango chutney and onion salad. We had 8 different bowls with a range of different things, some nice, some to an aquired taste id imagine.
The range of food on offer is impressive, there is a menu featuring the usual fare, ranging from korma through to phalls, and a menu sporting their specials, which in itself i thought was the entire menu on our first visit. The usual side dishes are all availiable, a range of flavoured rices, there is enough to keep the curry fan happy.
The food was served promptly, and all together. Portions are on the large side and all the food is very tasty. I have seen a few comments regarded the food being 'unhealthy'. With respect to those, im not sure that expecting anything less is really wise when opting for western indian cuisine, and fortunately for those of us looking for a tasty meal, rather than counting the calories when having a meal out, Nooris food is of a particularly good standard, much better than a lot of the other places in the immediate area.
A few puppodums with sundries, a curry, rice, naan, onion bahjis and a couple of large cobras cost us approx £20 a head, which is pretty good compared to a lot of other places these days. Since our first visit, we have returned a couple of times and i for one cant wait to go there again. Its worth the travel
