Al Duomo review by Mark
Italian restaurants seem to be all around now-a-days, no town is complete without several of them. By no means is this a bad thing; pizza, pasta, good sauces can all add up to a fantastic night out. However Al Duomo’s in Brighton seems to buck the trend slightly. Even after booking a table we had to wait 40 minutes in the bar until we could be seated, and it wasn’t until we reminded them we were still there did we get to sit down. I say sit down, what I really mean to write is cram ourselves in seeing as our table was for six and there was eight of us, we were all friends so we tried to ignore all the elbow bashing. No problem, I thought, maybe it just shows the restaurants bewildering popularity. Sadly not. I wasn’t expecting a five course a la carte meal, but how hard is it to get a brochette right? For the price I was expecting more than a piece of garlic bread with some cheese and tomato scattered on top, it was bland and completely unappealing. The main course came quickly, which wasn’t a surprise considering the minute mouthful of pasta that was presented to me. I would have been better off going to Marks and Spencer’s; I can guarantee that would have been considerably more flavoursome. First appearances said the pizza would have been a safer option, and I can’t deny that one or two did taste rather nice, however there was a lack of sauce and a mountain of cheese that somewhat distracted the palette. Overall it was an expensive and disappointing night out, the atmosphere may have been good but the waiters were generally miserable. Instead I’d recommended Pablo’s who offer fantastic prices for brilliant food and excellent, personal service or Fat Leo’s who again are exceptional value and provide exquisite food and service.
Similar people have had the same experiences. It wasn’t particularly busy when we went, but the fact that we were a group of ‘savage, unruly, distasteful’ teenagers no doubt meant we weren’t treated very well, all I can say is I’d describe the food in the same way.
