La Capannina Ristorante review by Anon

Well what can I say? Although we knew that it was a little overpriced, the previous visits were worth it. My starter of smoked salmon and goats cheese with rocket was poor. A handful of rocket was shoved on top covered in oil. The pathetic garnish of an iceberg lettuce leaf with grated carrot (which frankly I'd expect to see in a greasy spoon)did not deserve the £8.20 they were asking for it.

Main course even worse. I chose Veal scallops with cheese and Parma Ham £14.95. I could have been eating dog meat and I wouldn't have known. There was so much cheese (which I think was cheddar) that I could taste nothing else. The real shock came when my boyfreinds Fillet Steak was put in front of him. Now, I don't really know much about food, just that I like to eat it, and even I could tell instantly that that was NOT a fillet of beef. The chef tried hard to hide it with the litre of sauce that was poured over it, but there was no mistaking. It was an overcooked, shrunken piece of possibly sirloin (i'm not sure) with the big strip of fat to prove it. The vegetables, an even bigger laugh. Dry sliced carrots, Broccoli that fell apart when you put your fok in it, and saute potatoes, possibly cooked last week. Complaining proved difficult. When we questioned the waiter, he suddenly lost the ability to understand english, we gave up. A staggering £17.50 for non-fillet steak.

Even the wine was rubbish. My boyfriend was on beer and I wanted wine. My only choice, unless I wanted a whole bottle, was the house wine. I ordered half a caraff, which after one glass was sent back and probably poured back into the 3 litre bottle it came from.

We left very dissapointed, a little hungry, and I was contstantly reminded of the place all evening with the heartburn I got from the wine. They are now just like every other bog standard Italian in Brighton!
