El Mexicano

We both went to el mexicano on our night off and we found as we walked in a warm atmosphere. It was fairly busy but as we had booked there wasnt a problem getting a table. The staff were attentive as soon as we sat down, asking if we would like some drinks. Then a few moments after that our food, making sure that we were ready to order as my friend couldnt make up her mind!
when the food arrived it was hot and delicious. i had the prawns in garlic from the tapas menu and my friend had the dish with the chicken pots and chickpeas which was also yummy! For our mains i ordered the prawn and tuna wraps and my friend ordered the simple chilli con carnie. gorgeous! this was followed by cocktails =]
if anyone reads the bad reviews they have to go and try it for themselves so dont think that it is a bad restaurant until you have tried it!

I cannot believe the previous reviews for this place. We went there on Saturday night, the staff were great and food was very good.
My boyfriend had the "fajitas" dish, wich was so tasty and served on a slizzling plate.
My "tacos al pastor" were delicious, with the most succulent pieces of pork I have never had.
I can truly say this is authentic Mexican food, having worked in Mexico.

Have been going here for the past 8 years with my wife had a lovely meal again on saturday a party of us. we had spanish tapas to start and Mexican mains - Fajitas, tacos de camaron , tacos al pastor encipotlada and the list goes on......we frequent many restaurants and this is one of our favorites...having worked in California and Mexico you can appreciate the food here and why this restaurant has been around so long.
The british still don't get Mexican food........ unfortunatly Tex Mex came here first via the states so the yanks have a lot to answer for.
viva mexico and keep up the good work El Mexican We will see you soon

Awful.
Everytime I walk past this place I cringe and feel really sorry for the people sitting inside. Seriously bad food. Service not bad, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I agree with VS, below. We like the restaurant, partly because my husband proposed to me there, and the staff are friendly and seem to know what they're doing. But the food is pretty basic - freezer-to-fryer stuff. The cactus salad was horrible - all salads were gunked with orange dressing. Fine for £8 or £9 for the mid-week two-course meal but not worth the a la carte prices.

Second-worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. (The worst was a restaurant in Worcester which served tortilla chips with white sauce as 'nachos'.)
Good atmosphere, service ok if a little slow, but the food was absolutely awful!
Nachos were tortilla chips with just cheese and jalapenos on top and a side of salsa for £6. We had to pay extra for both the guacamole and the tiny pot of sour cream.
My main of tortillas verdura (or similar title) was about as Mexican as Findus crispy pancakes - not really worth the £10 I paid for it! And my boyfriend's beef fajitas which cost £13 looked like cat food and for that price was just served with guacamole and tortillas and no extra accompaniments.
I love Mexican food and live in Brighton but will never eat here again and would advise others not to either.
Altogether, very disappointing.

Left feeling a bit disappointed, the atmosphere and the service is great, but food was not good value for money.
We ordered Nachos to share, which came with just cheese and salsa (no chilli, guac, or sour cream) which made the dish bland for a £5 starter. My boyfriend had the swordfish, mojo sauce and rice which was beautiful, while I had the Diced beef, which was suculant and tasty, but came with very little, 3 small wraps, guac and a measly bit of salad, which is pitiful for £14. I was expecting if no vegtables came as a part of the dish (like peppers) there would be a decent size salad, but I have seen bigger pebbles on Brighton beach.
We had to ask twice for our bill, but the staff were quite nice, if not maybe a bit disorganised as we were also asked twice to order. If the quality and selection of the goods served improved I would probably return, but in the meantime no.
Oh, and I asked if they serve Free Range Chicken. They Don't.

awful. really really awful!!
I can honestly say that the mexican we attempt to make at home, following recipes on the back on jars, is a hundred times better than the 'authentic' mexican food that this restuarant serves.
The food is so bland it's hard to understand how the chef manages food as bland as birdseed. And to have 'the best tapas outside on spain' on the menu is the funniest thing I've ever read!!
Service is good though, decor, atmosphere is good - however fire the chef.

I took a 2 course lunch special here, as a trial for an evening visit. Sadly, the heating had only just been put on and so I was cold until relocated to a wall with a radiator (they need a few fan heaters to boost it up on icy days I think). Being a veggie, there are a few options that looked tempting. I had mushroom quesadillas (excellent) and vegetable tacos - served with (microwaved) rice and an slim helping of refried beans. After the reviews below I was relieved to find proper Mexican food instead of the usual tex-mex pastiche, with a glass of house wine (a first class Chilean Merlot) the meal came in under £10 and has to be good value. Service was excellent. A return is planned, I'm sure busier evenings will bring the temperature up!

Awful.
Fajitas cost me 10.95 and consisted of three tortillas, a plate with a table spoon of refried beans (with a sprinkle of cheese on top), a table spoon of guacamole, and a tea spoon of sour cream that had the consistency of water.
The chicken that was served was of a nice size but impossible to eat with the three tortillas. Why skimp on these things, they aren’t expensive...
Beer was expensive and limited.
Staff were fine, no complaints there, didn’t take long to be served the main course.
I can’t see how anyone could say it was authentic without knowing what real Mexican food is like. This place is not authentic whatsoever.
