Oki Nami

The food at Oki-Nami is unbeatable for authentic Japanese cuisine in this area. I was really impressed by the the quality and freshness. The beautiful and stylish new location next to the Theatre Royal and opposite the Pavilion Gardens makes the experience even better.
I went for the second time last Tuesday lunchtime and took advantage of the half price sushi offer which is great and makes it really cheap!

We went to the Oki Nami this Saturday (21st June) with a group of 12 and had the most fantastic time! (We wanted to try it out now it has moved to Brighton)
I was a little unsure at first as a few friends went after it had just opened and said that the service was a little slow, however, these all seemed to have been ironed out.
We started the evening with several cocktails - I can really recommend the Cosmos - very Sex and the City! We love the new cocktail bar upstairs and in particular the Eastern versions of the cocktails - fantastic!!!
Many of our group had never eaten Japanese food before so we left it to the Maitre 'D to order for us and what an incredible selection of food we had! The oysters were to die for and the soft crab sushi. The staff were fantastic and spent time explaining the menu and how Japanese tapas works. Some of our group didn't like fish so it was great that there were so many other options including organic chicken and lots of vegetarian options (loved the Edamame!)
A great place to go with friends who like to share different dishes and spend time enjoying a fabulous meal. Oki Nami is definitely the place to be and I can now understand how it got such a fantastic reputation when it was in Hove. Top class! Not just a place to eat out but a dining experience; has to be one of Brighton's best restaurants.

My boyfriend and I went to Oki-Nami on a Saturday evening on the longest day of the year, with our 2-year old son. We were there about 8pm with no prior table reservation. The place was packed with happy diners, there were 6 other guests on the waiting list and even the bar upstairs was full. Nonetheless, the staff were quick to find a solution. We were given a high table which we gladly accepted. They even expressed concern about the safety of our son sitting perched on a high bar stool. But being avid lovers of japanese cuisine, we decided that it was not a problem (and it certainly was not).
The staff were all professional, yet personal and helpful in every way. We didn't have to wait long before our orders were taken and served. Presentation, taste and quality of the meal went hand in hand. It was simply superb.
The menu offers an array of choices. All-time favourites like sushi, sashimi and tempura, grilled items either in sets or à la carte. The japanese 'tapas' was an excellent idea. This comes in smaller portions thus giving guests the opportunity to sample the different goodies. There were ebi tempura, fried gyoza (dumpling) filled with salmon and shiitake mushrooms, yakitori and agedashi dofu (tofu) just to name a few.
Desserts were ample and reflect the japanese kitchen. We ordered matcha ice-cream. We were given 3 scoops since we were 3 persons. It was a little creamy to my taste but it was not too bad.
The restaurant's decor was bright and simple. The origami was a good idea. Chopsticks are wrapped in a piece of paper with instructions to various origami figures. A piece of colourful square origami paper is attached to this. We had a fun time attempting these paperfolding projects. Just a note to those on dates: If your companion is not the best company on date night, fold origami figures until your food arrives....
All in all a good place to be if you want to enjoy japanese cuisine (and perhaps impress your friends with your paperfolding skills :))

(I'm honestly not sure about the previous two reviews at all. As going for a regular chicken dish in a Japanese restaurant seems a little crazy to me?)
I loved Oki-Nami in Hove and I finally had the pleasure of eating at the new restaurant by the Theatre Royal this evening.
The food was quite simply UTTER PERFECTION. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted divine. I have eaten a vast array of sushi in my time and this was pure EXCELLENCE! I felt it was worth every penny, as it was obviously so painstakingly prepared and so expertly arranged.
The staff were welcoming, delightfully friendly and very helpful indeed. One member of staff even dug out some tamari for us especially on request. The cocktails were FABULOUS too!
We all had a WONDERFUL time there and we will certainly visit again soon. Thus I'm overjoyed at Oki-Nami moving to central Brighton!

I dont know what these people did but I ordered a chicken dish and got gristle and about 1 piece of chicken. Didnt pay for my dish and left very disappointed, my wifes food was not much better but we paid for that. The waitress we got was very nervous about telling people how to order and a bit rude to the people we were sitting next to. Like most and but not all Brighton restaurants it is over priced for what it is. Style over content i think the phrase is.

My husband and I ate here on the 7th of June and were really disappointed with this restaurant that others had raved about.
The portions were small, and the prices high. The service was not great, and the menu wasn't easy to get to grips with, as the table next to us also found. I hate complaining in restaurants, but we had to complain about my husband's chicken dish, as it didn’t actually have any chicken in it.

Hearing it had moved to a new venue near the theatre royal i was excited to try the new okinami and I was not let down!
The new venue is beautiful spacious, light and airy. I have heard that in teh first couple of weeks there were a few staff problems but this has been well and truly resolved.
A group of 4 of us decided to eat upstairs. We started with some amazing cocktails all with a hint of japanese ingredients they must have gone down well as I do not remember any of their names!!
I had a chicken bento box which i think was about £12 for miso soup and a good sized box which was delicious my girl friend and her husband has a mixture of Sushi and Sashimi which was perfectly fresh and melted in the mouth.
Hubby had gyoza (which i did not try but he assured me they were perfect) and a Chicken Bento.
The price was reasonable especially for the fresh quality of the ingredients especially the fish.
Congratulations Okinami on the move. I for one will be frequenting regularly!

Oki Nami has moved next to Theatre Royal in Brighton. We had heard good reviews so decided to go there for a meal. Our starter was the dumplings which I have to say were delicious, very tasty, obviously home-made but our mains (sizzling platters) I had the "seared" tuna and my other half had the steak, they both came out cold, Tuna was overcooked and very dry not at all "seared" and the steak was very tough and eventually inedible. The good thing is the chef actually made an appearance to apologise and we were given a discount off the food bill. I think the sizzling platters were cold due to the poor service from the two waiters. A bit of customer service (from serving staff) wouldn't go amiss.

Excellent food, although not a cheap meal. Good simple japanese restaurant, but maybe a bit too stark for some.
