Gars Chinese restaurant is the best chinese in Brighton, the food is exquisite and the design is beautiful, I have been there many times and have been going for years, it's my favorite restaurant in the whole of brighton.

The service is good each member of staff is very welcoming and polite, although it may be the one thing they could improve on slightly, the atmosphere is fantastic. And I think the food is worth every penny for its quality, its simply divine.

Finally I have to mention, the beautiful design once more the theme of it fits the restaurant perfectly and the flowers are magnificent.

To some it up in a few words, Gars is simply marvelous.

Oh dear

Such a shame. What was the best chinese in Brighton has been spoiled by such rude service. I would still say grea food, however one things that leaves a bad taste in your mouth is the the atmosphere and staff. I havent been to Gars for over a year because of a bad experience I had with a loud hen party spoiling a birthday meal for my mother. Its was lunchtime and the places was empty. My partner and I were looking for a place to eat and we walked past Gars and thought, sod it lets pop in for their lunch menu. The place was pretty much empty so we thought it would be a nice meal. How wrong we were. We were sat at our table given the full munu, no lunchtime menu as was advertised outside on the board. after 5 minutes of beiong left on our own without so much as a drink the waiter came over and I asked if we could see the set lunch menu. THE SET MENU the waiter screamed back. making us feel like cheap skates for asking for something they were offering on the board outside. He walked off and for the next 5 minutes didnt see him. After this time we got up and left.... Gars you really have gone down the pan. You have lost a customer that has eaten in your resturant for over 8 years and has used the venue for many a family occasion. NEVER AGAIN

I went to this restaurant with friends and we were shocked by the way we were treated by one of the waiters. He was rude, short tempered whilst taking order and was even heard gossiping about us to his colleagues. Half way through our dinner light was switched off so we were eating in very poor lighting (this was before closing time and other diners were put through same experience). Food was good but one certainly would not expect to receive that kind of treatment from a waiter in a restaurant. I dined there once before and, whilst service was poor, food was good so we decided to give them another chance. Unfortunately, we were disappointed again!

I have posted a review to the Gars website but to date have not received a reply so I would like to add my comments to your website. I was with a party of friends on Saturday night at Gars, we were given the room downstairs which would include Karaoke after the meal. I did not see the staff smile at all and they did not speak to us at all, 'just sit down and get on with your meal'. The manageress was particularly stern and reprimanded the staff in front of customers which is certainly not good practice. The starter was very good but the main course was in a word SPICY, most of us could not eat more than a few mouthfuls of food so most of the food was left. When i mentioned this to the waiter he just said "Oh", not the answer i would expect. When we had finished the meal we were not offered coffees and when i did manage to request 4 coffees we were charged for these on top of the price we had paid for the set meal, i.e. £27.00 per person. A very disappointing evening and i would certainly not recommend this restaurant to anyone who i liked!

I have always loved the food in Gars and have to say no change there. pre booked a table in the upstairs retaurant two weeks in advance. I was taking my parents out for a birthday meal. When we arrived we were told we now didnt have the table where requested as they were already taken which was dissaponting but not the end of the world.

We were a bit rushed in deciding what we wanted and the head waiter/manger wasnt the nicest person. He was bordering on rude but the atmosphere was very nice. Had a great meal the food was amazing until halfway through the meal all you could hear was a god awful karaoke belting out of the room downstairs. You couldnt hear yourself speak over the noise. It completely ruined the evening and made us finish up and rush our meal. This should have been pointed out when we booked the table. They had a hen party downstairs with people running around sceaming. I would go back because the food is so nice but if I wanted to be entertained by a loud hen party I would have gone to Yates. Come Gars think about your regular customers not the pound note filling your till

Thanks to 'brighton-eating' for a great guide.

Dropped off 2 of our girls to the 'Girls Aloud' Concert last night and wanted to have a chinese. Found Gars from map, sat upstairs by a window overlooking the street. Very courteous service, fast turnaround and lovely food. A very nice evening....if you go, sit upstairs it's much better.

Revisited Gars on Saturday 5th April for lunch as we thought we could always rely on their quality. However, I don't know whether they were more focused on the very large family group dining there or not, but the experience fell well short of our expectations. We ordered the chicken satay skewers and the garlic pork from the lunchtime menu, along with crispy chilli beef and noodles with beansprouts from the mains menu. The skewers felt hard and chewy at the ends as if they had been recooked, the garlic pork came in rather large slices that managed to be tough and mainly fat at the same time, and the chilli beef, although very prettily presented, wasn't crisp and had very little sauce. The boiled rice accompanying the pork and the noodles were fine, but then they're hard to get wrong! The house white wine tasted cheap and nasty, and for the prices they charge could have easily been much nicer. This is a bete noir of mine - if you have a house wine, you are recommending this, and should be of reasonable quality for the price. So many restauranteurs seem to think it's just an excuse to fob you off with some godawful plonk. Yes, we could have sent the wine back, but we'd decided to cut our losses by then. We'll go back again, as we'd never write off a favourite for what was hopefully an off day, but not soon, and with trepidation.

Came with a friend for the set lunch, and it was brilliant.

The food was really good, and although the portion sizes weren't over-generous, it was much better than getting huge platefuls of horrible food.

The staff were on the right side of attentive, and I liked the fact that although the price was modest, there were lovely linen tablecloths etc and we weren't made to feel we were set-lunch cheapskates.

I recommend Gars to everyone.
