An absoloute shame, used to be the best Chinese we'd ever eaten in! Now.... good food but very very appaling service. Slow, unfriendly, inpolite and to be honest quite rude. Felt very very rushed to eat and when we refused to pay the service charge they had added to our bill we were sworn at. Used to eat here on a regular basis and will now never return.

The food was quite good , but the service quite frankly was indifferent. There were two of us and we felt as though we were treated as an after thought. Whe the crispy duck arrived if we had not asked no sauce was supplied to accompany. A wine list was placed on the table, but no one came to take an order. The main courses only arrived after we chased and had waited approx 30 minutes.

For the prices charged I have had a much better experience elsewhere.

I feel th equality of service has declined since I last ate here, perhaps they have become complacent.

When we "chased" they said they were busy , but we would assume they knew how many covers they were going to serve that night!!!!!!

This is a good looking restaurant with staff that operate with an amusing style that blends efficiency with mild but inoffensive rudeness - often the mark of a good chinese eating experience. While the initial impressions were favourable because of the frenetic sense of action, the great smells and the full house, the eventual dining experience was unbelievably disappointing and ultimately no better than the average take away. This is the obvious comparison one makes and on this occasion, for example, the crispy duck was below the standard I get from my regular Lee Gardens take away on Lewes Road. None of the family were impressed.

Style and good food make for a great experience but one without the other, as is the case with Gars, makes for a pretentious atmosphere that leaves you feeling well and truly ripped off and badly fed.

A polite notice to the owner. You need new staff and stop allowing the hen parties because its these two points that ruin the restaurant. What a terrible shame.

I guess you either love or hate this place. For me the food was a run of the mill Chinese, the likes of which you can find in any takeaway except here you pay twice as much for the decent decor.

I have eaten in some of the best Chinese restaurants in the country and for me if this represents the best Chinese in Brighton - what a shame!

Gars Chinese restaurant is the best chinese in Brighton, the food is exquisite and the design is beautiful, I have been there many times and have been going for years, it's my favorite restaurant in the whole of brighton.

The service is good each member of staff is very welcoming and polite, although it may be the one thing they could improve on slightly, the atmosphere is fantastic. And I think the food is worth every penny for its quality, its simply divine.

Finally I have to mention, the beautiful design once more the theme of it fits the restaurant perfectly and the flowers are magnificent.

To some it up in a few words, Gars is simply marvelous.

Oh dear

Such a shame. What was the best chinese in Brighton has been spoiled by such rude service. I would still say grea food, however one things that leaves a bad taste in your mouth is the the atmosphere and staff. I havent been to Gars for over a year because of a bad experience I had with a loud hen party spoiling a birthday meal for my mother. Its was lunchtime and the places was empty. My partner and I were looking for a place to eat and we walked past Gars and thought, sod it lets pop in for their lunch menu. The place was pretty much empty so we thought it would be a nice meal. How wrong we were. We were sat at our table given the full munu, no lunchtime menu as was advertised outside on the board. after 5 minutes of beiong left on our own without so much as a drink the waiter came over and I asked if we could see the set lunch menu. THE SET MENU the waiter screamed back. making us feel like cheap skates for asking for something they were offering on the board outside. He walked off and for the next 5 minutes didnt see him. After this time we got up and left.... Gars you really have gone down the pan. You have lost a customer that has eaten in your resturant for over 8 years and has used the venue for many a family occasion. NEVER AGAIN

I went to this restaurant with friends and we were shocked by the way we were treated by one of the waiters. He was rude, short tempered whilst taking order and was even heard gossiping about us to his colleagues. Half way through our dinner light was switched off so we were eating in very poor lighting (this was before closing time and other diners were put through same experience). Food was good but one certainly would not expect to receive that kind of treatment from a waiter in a restaurant. I dined there once before and, whilst service was poor, food was good so we decided to give them another chance. Unfortunately, we were disappointed again!
