Thanks to 'brighton-eating' for a great guide.

Dropped off 2 of our girls to the 'Girls Aloud' Concert last night and wanted to have a chinese. Found Gars from map, sat upstairs by a window overlooking the street. Very courteous service, fast turnaround and lovely food. A very nice evening....if you go, sit upstairs it's much better.

Revisited Gars on Saturday 5th April for lunch as we thought we could always rely on their quality. However, I don't know whether they were more focused on the very large family group dining there or not, but the experience fell well short of our expectations. We ordered the chicken satay skewers and the garlic pork from the lunchtime menu, along with crispy chilli beef and noodles with beansprouts from the mains menu. The skewers felt hard and chewy at the ends as if they had been recooked, the garlic pork came in rather large slices that managed to be tough and mainly fat at the same time, and the chilli beef, although very prettily presented, wasn't crisp and had very little sauce. The boiled rice accompanying the pork and the noodles were fine, but then they're hard to get wrong! The house white wine tasted cheap and nasty, and for the prices they charge could have easily been much nicer. This is a bete noir of mine - if you have a house wine, you are recommending this, and should be of reasonable quality for the price. So many restauranteurs seem to think it's just an excuse to fob you off with some godawful plonk. Yes, we could have sent the wine back, but we'd decided to cut our losses by then. We'll go back again, as we'd never write off a favourite for what was hopefully an off day, but not soon, and with trepidation.

Came with a friend for the set lunch, and it was brilliant.

The food was really good, and although the portion sizes weren't over-generous, it was much better than getting huge platefuls of horrible food.

The staff were on the right side of attentive, and I liked the fact that although the price was modest, there were lovely linen tablecloths etc and we weren't made to feel we were set-lunch cheapskates.

I recommend Gars to everyone.

Mmm. Sunday, 10.28pm. The waiter tells us we could only order one course as they were closing at 11. Fortunately, us two were keen to eat and go - and we were really looking forward to coming here for the first time; we'd travelled quite a way also. The place was empty, bar some diners upstairs. We were sat under the stairs, and we ordered very quickly so as to not hold them up. The food soon arrived all together and, apart from the aromatic lamb pancakes, it was very good; great noodles/shoots, rice, kungpo chicken, decent chilled house white too. The music was chilled and too, as was the decor. So far, an acceptable dining experience. The ONLY thing that put me off my food - AND THIS WAS A BIG THING - was the WAITER and WAITRESS HASSLING BY CONSTANTLY WATCHING US FROM A DISTANCE OF JUST 3 METRES while we ate. This was interpersed only by frequent walk-pasts - it was a nightmare! Now we know what it must be like under surveillance by armed guards! If we ever go there again, we will tunnel our way out. Good food on the whole, but let down by a complete lack of respect for these two customers paying good money.

I visited the 4th of August, with three others, two of us ordered from the main menu and the other two ordered the vegitarian set menu. The vegitarian set menu was excellent with three courses, and indeed, the dishes from the main menu were also of excellent quality. The overall quality was excellent - I even had a dessert of lemon sorbet, which was the best sorbet I have ever tasted! The service was very good, and appropriately unobtrusive. Overall, maybe not one of the cheapest Chinese restaurants, but definately one of the best. I will definately dine here again - highly recommended!!

Visited here Bank Holiday Monday, for lunch. They have a £10.00 lunch special, but we opted to choose from the main menu. As others have said, it's an expensive restaurant, but, everything we had was extremely tasty and amply portioned. (A bit like me after lunch!) We had crispy seaweed (greens), scallops in blackbean sauce, sweet and sour pork made from tenderloin fillet, crispy chilli beef, egg fried rice and noodles with beansprouts. Not a tiny scrap of fat on the pork, best egg fried rice we've ever had, tender plump scallops, tasty spicy crispy beef; in other words everything was gorgeous! Very friendly staff, lovely surroundings. If I had to grumble, could have had better background music (MOR bland, bland, bland!). However, if you want to splash out you can't go wrong here. Highly recommended.

I went to Gar`s with 5 friends, and I will say it is a lovely place. The food was the best chinese food we have ever had. The staff were always there when you needed them. we was even cheeky enough to ask for more free chocolate after the meal and the waiter was happy to give us more then we could eat. I will be going back to this place and recommend it to my friends.

It was our first time in Gars last Friday, heard so much about it from friends so decided to give it a try, and we had the most delicious chinese meal ever! On top of that the service was second to none, we were greeted with the most welcoming face by I think the manageress who led us to the bar for a pre-dinner drink first while we can browse through the menu, then we were taken upstairs to our table in a beautiful room which amazed us how big it is. Overall the food was excellent, service was attentive, we will recommend Gars to everyone we know and we will definately be their regulars from now on.
