Terre a Terre
our comments
A vegetarian restaurant situated near Brighton Pavillion, the menu is exciting and innovative. The restaurant was started 13 years ago by classically trained chefs Amanda Powley and Philip Taylor, who wanted to test out their ideas about cooking without meat. There is a good selection of organic wines, beers and ciders. Menu options include soy steeped deep fried hoi sin sesame toasted tofu, sherry and balsamic vinegar coated sun-dried tomatoes, sodden socca and more. And remember, just because you aren’t a vegetarian doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy the food.- March 2005

I can't speak highly enough about my night at Terre a Terre. The food was out of this world, the surroundings were lovely and the staff were warm, friendly and helpful. Everything was spot on, even the cocktails.
All this doesn't come cheap, but the chance to have this immense choice of quality vegetarian food is well worth it. A 3 course meal with drinks ended up at around £50 each, which isn't too bad either. All in all, the best food I've ever had.

Cannot speak highly enough of this place. Fantastic menu with some really inventive dishes (try the battered haloumi and you'll see what I mean). Our waiter was first class, attentive without being intrusive, and the gap between courses was just right despite us being a party of ten. It's actually not as expensive as you might think either: There's a set menu of starter, main, dessert and coffee for just £30. If you love vegetarian food (hell, if you just love food) you won't be disappointed. Unless you think a meal isn't a meal without meat then, well... there's a Burger King not far away.

Unlike one of the earlier reviewers, I have seldom eaten food as innovative and tasty as that served by Terre a Terre. I am a meat eater whose partner is veggie and I would count this as my favourite restaurant. Even other meat-eating friends aprreciate it. To compare, we recently ate at Charlie Trotters in Chicago, supposedly one of the best restaurants in the USA - four of us went so we sampled both the standard and the vegetable menu and we were underwhemed, all of us comparing it unfavourably with Terre a Terre. Try it for a taste sensation, but only if your pallette is not spoiled by too many burgers and not if you need to look at the price - just let your taste buds do the reviewing!

After promising to take the girlfriend there for sometime (who is vegetarian) I finally made it over to Terre a Terre. I knew it had a reputation for being poncy and the menu is just a joke; it's nonsense really. It sounds like you will be getting all this stuff but in reality a sentance in the meals description turns out to be just a dollop of sauce. Also the menu is quite small, there is not a lot of choice.
The service was friendly and pleasent and we ordered the tapas they do which is like a small bit of every meal they sell. The presenatation was excellent and the food looked lovely, only someone had gone crazy with tarmarind dressing so everything just tasted sour. This was a real shame because some of the food tasted nice but was immediately drowned out by the citric acid.
Our main meals were okay; very ambitious food a fusion of lots of styles and flavours but as such there is perhaps too much happening and tastes tend to compete with each other. The Beaujolais we ordered was not particularly good either.
Neither our meals were worth the money nor the pretence, though to be fair we could have causght them ona bad night and therefore I will give them another chance.
The food is ambitious and it is certainly something different, only on this occasion there was not enough care taken... and come on those menus!

My boyfriend took me here after telling me how amazing it is. I was a little scepticle at first as it is an all vegetarian menu but I was won over. Love at first bite springs to mind. The food is fresh and of supreme quality and quantity. We had a laugh at the way they described some of the dishes. The service was excellent and we were made to feel extremely welcome. Also they dont have waiters who go up to your table when you are in the middle of eating and ask if everything's ok or stand around nattering at you etc. They do keep an eye out for anyone who looks as though they want anything etc. I liked the interior design, it's the sort of place you can go for a posh evening out or just a casual meal. Pricing is worth it, believe me. I disagree with anyone who says they need meat to make this food a meal. The flavours are fantastic and I cannot wait to go here again!
Just 1 thing, I do think the chairs are a little low and uncomfortable. But... having said that I'd rather a chair were a little too low than a little too high and the chairs arent majorly uncomfortable, they just need a cushion or something :)
Go! If you appreciate good food you'll love it here!

The below is a copy of an email I sent to Paul Morgan at Terre a Terre on 16th July 2006:
"My wife and I have been eating at Terre a Terre for nearly ten years now - in all that time, I can safely say that I have never had a bad meal at your restaurant. Until Saturday night that is.
To be honest, I'm not really sure where to start:
- perhaps I should start with the fact that it took 100 minutes for our main course to finally materialise?
- how about the sad, soggy soufflé and three olives that comprised my main course?
- how about the fact that where you once served 330ml organic Coke, you now serve 200ml run of the mill Coca Cola?
- maybe I should mention the miniature pile of tofu that turned up as an appetizer?
- most importantly of all, the fact that you have drastically reduced the portion sizes whilst keeping your prices the same.
I complained about the microscopic dessert that showed up to our waitress who returned with the explanation that you were trying something different with the menu, and were attempting to create something lighter in an attempt to make people eat more. This just about the summed up the night for me. All this new policy says to me is that you are willing to sacrifice customer satisfaction for maximum profit: all very well when you have a restaurant packed with tourists during the summer (who have no idea that the food can be so so much better). Come the winter, I only hope you don’t find yourself with an empty restaurant after people like myself (who have recommended people unreservedly to your establishment for years) start taking odds with your new ‘tourist menu’. At the least, if you make the decision to reduce portion sizes then reduce your prices as well."
As an update, I ate there last weekend and absolutely nothing has changed. The pudding was tiny and hugely overpriced. The Coke is still in a 200ml bottle - perhaps its petty to complain about this, but all I see when I eat in Terre a Terre now is a once great restuarant ripping people off by reducing portion sizes and overcharging for everything. Even the food isn't as flavoursome as it once was. And the atmosphere! Don't get me started - we sat at the back of restaurant next to a table of parents and young children, who made the most godawful racket, mostly due to the fact that the waiting staff gave the kids toys which they proceeded to bang on the table with no let up for thirty minutes. Great.
Suffice to say, I won't be going back! Ever.

Terre a terre is one of the most exciting and innovative food experiences I have ever had. Ok, so the menu language is a little flowery and many of the ingredients might not appear in a Scrabble dictionary, but so what - the food is simply amazing, with a superb mix of textures and flavours. As someone who normally likes something from the butcher or the fishmonger on my plate, terre a terre could easily convert me. Go, and be amazed at the imagination and execution of the dishes on offer, but be warned - if like me, you jump in for the terre a tapas and a main course, you could be disappointed as you jealously watch the amazing desserts pass you by en route to those with more self control.
