Terre a Terre
our comments
A vegetarian restaurant situated near Brighton Pavillion, the menu is exciting and innovative. The restaurant was started 13 years ago by classically trained chefs Amanda Powley and Philip Taylor, who wanted to test out their ideas about cooking without meat. There is a good selection of organic wines, beers and ciders. Menu options include soy steeped deep fried hoi sin sesame toasted tofu, sherry and balsamic vinegar coated sun-dried tomatoes, sodden socca and more. And remember, just because you aren’t a vegetarian doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy the food.- March 2005

Whilst not a vegetarian myself, I had dined at Terre A Terre a couple of times in the past and enjoyed the experience. However on this occasion (a Saturday lunchtime), I was very disappointed. The restaurant was noisy, crowded, lots of families, pushchairs and associated paraphernalia (admittedly, being child-unfriendly, I should have known to avoid Saturday lunch). My boyfriend ordered an organic lemonade, and at £2.75 a glass expected some nice homemade lemonade. So when a tin containing average lemonade rolled up, he was quite surprised. The wine menu is overpriced. The food was nothing special. Generally, the dishes we ordered were very rich and stodgy and bad value for money, with the exception of the Iddli Spice Puff starter (very authentic version of a south indian dish) and a pudding, Cigarillo Mejoolie. Service, on the other hand, was excellent - the staff were efficient and well informed about the food.

I'm a big fan of this restaurant and have spent many a pleasent evening there. However one word of warning.
Unless you enjoy being surrounded by screaming, badly behaved children who run around the place DO NOT visit this place for Sunday lunch. We went there last Sunday and it was horrendous.
I'm all for families eating out but is it too much to expect parents to take responsibility for their kids and teach them how to behave? One of the children actually went to the toilet all over the floor whilst we were there.
If this happened in some chavy pub people would think this unacceptable but somehow do it in a middle class place full of indulgent parents and suddenly it's okay.

Wow...it was our anniversary and we wanted something a little different. Neither of us had ever tried terre a terre, but were very pleasently suprised.
The food was AMAZING, and that is really no understatement. The flavours were so unusual and combined so well with each other. Wine was a little pricey, but the set menu was very reasonable and so worth it. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone whether you are vegetarian or not. Simply amazing food and the service that goes with it. Many thanks for making it a very memorable evening.

I was struggling to find a decent restaurant to book for Easter Sunday, so was recommended this Vegetarian restaurant by a culinary Brightonian friend. As a regular carnivorous dinner on the London scene I thought I’d have to give this place a try. So duly booked a last minute table for two at their reception, whilst glancing through their descriptive menu, and was fortunate to get a 9pm sitting on the same night.
Arriving a little earlier we were greeted with a warm welcome then seated immediately, in the mid section, which I gather, is the heart of the restaurant.
Our first impression was the atmosphere. It grabbed us. It was vibrant and noisy, if not a little distracting with one or two guests almost shouting in conversation on nearby tables. The décor had a dark modern art feel, picture a mix of primary colours sweeping through the dining area with contemporary table settings; all bodes well for a modern meat free restaurant and a great dining experience.
On the service front, our waiter was welcoming and attentive to begin with, but almost made us feel a little rushed with his promptness. Once we’d order our food and left with the wine list we were then completely ignored 5 minutes; fortunately the manager spotted us to take a drinks order.
Regards the food, having already read the menu I had my taste buds set on the ‘Rosti Revisited’ served with spinach topped with a poached egg. My partner opted for the aptly named ‘Get’s my goat’ a Goat’s cheese crostini on caramelised onions with Pumpkin confit, Endive and Lentils de Puy. Now despite the flurry of waiters efficiently serving tables around us, with appetising dishes, we had waited 45 mins for our meal and I was on the verge of complaint when our dishes arrived.
After this languid service I was then let down further on my dish. If you serve a poached egg please ensure it is not served hard. It was a real shame as I did enjoy the nutty taste and textures of the rosti and spinach combination, which was plentiful. As for the ‘Get’s my Goat’, too many varying flavours, veering from sweet to savoury, the mix all on one plate that didn’t fuse together well, though it was nicely presented.
Finally when the waiter came to clear our dishes, not noticing my un-eaten hard egg, asked how everything was; alas our sullen comments seem to fall on deft ears and no response. So without even opening the dessert menu we asked for the bill, which was served with the same promptness as when we first arrived. From our experience we felt it was necessary not to include the service charge, which again was not picked up on by the staff or manager.
Overall I can see why my friends recommended it, but for the slightly over priced menu I would expect a better standard of service. As I am someone who appreciates dining out regularly, particularly when I work behind the scenes for a restaurant group, it’s just a shame they didn’t get right with us on the night.

After wanting to visit this restaurant for so long, i finally got my chance last week. Oh, and how it was worth the wait. It was sublime. I defy any meat-eater to taste this food and say they need neat. The intensity of flavours were immense. My only gripe - the rhubarb trifle was just too 'deconstructed' - a trifle should be a yummy mess. Yes - its not cheap but worth every penny.

Awful! Cramped tables, service which was at best haphazard, perfectly good ingredients which had been heaped together to produce (con)fusion recipes. Very expensive. Never again.

I am Fred Flinstone, afraid of veg, exercise and 3/4 length trousers/shorts/longs.
A steak eater,a lamb shank eater, a lover of scrathings.
However i must say to you all that Terre a Terre is the most sublime place to enjoy.
You will be amazed at the taste, quality and imagination.

I can't speak highly enough about my night at Terre a Terre. The food was out of this world, the surroundings were lovely and the staff were warm, friendly and helpful. Everything was spot on, even the cocktails.
All this doesn't come cheap, but the chance to have this immense choice of quality vegetarian food is well worth it. A 3 course meal with drinks ended up at around £50 each, which isn't too bad either. All in all, the best food I've ever had.
