our comments

A vegetarian restaurant situated near Brighton Pavillion, the menu is exciting and innovative. The restaurant was started 13 years ago by classically trained chefs Amanda Powley and Philip Taylor, who wanted to test out their ideas about cooking without meat. There is a good selection of organic wines, beers and ciders. Menu options include soy steeped deep fried hoi sin sesame toasted tofu, sherry and balsamic vinegar coated sun-dried tomatoes, sodden socca and more. And remember, just because you aren’t a vegetarian doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy the food.

I personally love this place and have been eating there since it originally opened around the corner.

However, I was struck reading the reviews here that they seem to be about two totally different restaurants. I would defy anyone to come to a reasonable conclusion about whether they should or should not eat here based on what people have written! Makes it all a bit pointless really.

Having read some of the negative reviews on here lately, I was slightly sceptical at my girlfriend's choice of restaurant, but as the veggies in the party outnumbered this carnivore 3:1, I grudgingly agreed to book it. Well, I'm pleased that I did! Quite simply the food was outstanding, starting with the sussex cheddar soufle which was to die for. The wine in particular seems on the pricey side, but for a special night out I feel you get what you pay for: some of the best food in Brighton with good service and a vibrant atmosphere.

i absolutely agree with the last few reviews about Terre a Terre. When it first started the food was so fantastic.the flavours really zinged out from the plate. I have been so disappointed with the menu for the last two visits. We ate there a couple of weeks ago and my vegan husband really struggled to find something without cheese...and the depth of flavour just isn't in the food anymore. I really feel they have lost their edge, and I shan't be going back there for a while. It's such a pity because it really used to be a treat and a joy..

love it. Ok so the Terre a tapas is getting smaller, but it is still fabulous. Service is best in Brighton, I am sure many of the staff were here when first came 8 yeras ago. Great place to take your mum, your girlfirend, colleagues, mates (although not Kiwi's "what do you mean they don't serve meat?!")

Myself and my huband dined at Terre a Terre last weekend and had a wonderful evening. We first dined there 2 years ago and the food is still as wonderful as ever. The staff were friendly and attentive and can mix mean cocktails!

We used to love Terre a Terre and it was definitely our favourite restuarant . We haven't been there for a few years and decided to treat ourselves as it was our wedding anniversary. What a big disappointment!! They have definitely have a new chef or are under new management. Also they hassle you to hurry your meal so they can fit in more punters which is outrageous considering how much they charge for a meal! We won't go there again and will pass the message onto friends and family.

i agree with the above review

I went there about 7 years ago. it was the best vegetarian menu I have ever seen in europe (I travel all the time!). I took a friend there recently and it was very clearly under different management and a different chef...

Well, I've read the other reviews and maybe the restaurant has got better! It was highly recommended to us, so I took my husband there last year as a specal birthday treat.

The staff were arrogant and dismissive and the food was mediocre, well presented but lacking in taste. I was so disappointed and we would not consider going there again.

Is Terre a Terre becoming complacent? After several years of winning awards and generally being regarded as one of Brighton's best, the new menu is left wanting. The food is now either overly experimental with poorly chosen flavours that clash on the palate or far too basic, using cheap and simple ingredients thrown together with lacking inspiration. The menu is full of the usual spin of course, designed to wow us with it's knowledge of unusual ingredients, but in reality, what you get is no better than something you could rustle up in the kitchen yourself on a busy friday night. One haloumi kebab with a bit of fried potato on the side?! Is that really worth £15?

The service is, as always, polite, helpful and friendly. Yet, we left there recently feeling like we'd been ripped off. Having frequented the place for years, we won't be going back until we've heard that it's worth that little bit extra. At an average of £70 for a two course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine and tip, it's worth spending your hard earned cash elsewhere if you are looking for value for money and a full stomach. The portions are very small, apart from the classic rosti of course, and that's only worth trying once. The side dishes cost extra and even the (weak) coffee is served in the tiniest cups available.

Terre a Terre may still be booked up for now, but for how much longer can they ride on their previous success? Shame.

Had the tapas starter which is the best vegetarian food i have ever had. The only thing i wasn't too impressed with was the tandoori halloumi, not quite the right flavours. And unfortunately i had the kebabs for mains, basically its a measly halloumi portion on a cocktail stick with sitting on a bed of cabbage in sea of risotto. Very average! My partner had the mushroom main and that was superb.

Overall really impressed. Portions are massive. Service is very good.

The Graphic Foodie

Monday, April 27, 2009 - The Tikka Kachumber starter–a tikka halloumi kebab failed to pack a flavor punch. It was balanced, it was tasty but the lack of spice depth made it feel something was missing. Boring...The impressive looking Terre a Tapas came along and cheered me up a bit. It was essentially bits and pieces from the menu - an assortment of salads, pulses, baba ganoush dip, deep fried corn cakes, noodles and battered hallumi. It also included the most intensely flavoured tofu I had ever eaten.
