the george is bloody gorgeous

chips , cheese and humous :)

Oh and my two vegan friends freaking love it there, never a complaint about the food what so ever, shame they took chocolate mocha cake off of the menu though, but apparently the vegan nacho's make up for it!!!

I have to agree that this place has really gone downhill in the last couple of months. I've had absolutely fantastic food here in the past - well presented, generous portions, quality ingredients and most importantly, really, really tasty. There seemed to be a real passion for food in the kitchens there.

However, my last two visits have been VERY disappointing. Yesterday I ate one of the worst meals out I've ever had. It was meant to be bangers and garlic mash with a red wine and onion gravy: the mash was hard, tasteless and slightly bitter, the bangers were like plain quorn ones only smaller and not as nice, and the "red wine and onion gravy" was, we swear, some kind of condensed soup. Tasted (and looked) like ketchup and HP sauce mixed together.

It seems they are regularly short on key ingredients. On my previous visit I ordered falaffel, but they neglected to mention they had no tzatziki or humous, and gave me chilli sauce and tahini instead. It tasted so wrong.

The glowing reviews printed by the front door that were once readily deserved can no longer be trusted, and I really can't recommend eating there anymore.

oh, how the mighty fall.... the food in this place used to be fantastic, their Sunday Roasts were superb..... but all that has changed.

last night me and a group of friends had the most underwhelming food i have eaten for a very long time. we are talking Weatherspoons/ Little Chef standard here - which is fine on the A303, but not what we were looking for last night.

really sad that a place with such a great reputation can be undone by a few numpties who clearly don't care about the place.

Thought this page needed a review from 2008 (March 2008) since things seem to have changed a bit at the George. I've eaten there twice lately, once on a busy Friday evening and once on a quiet Thursday, and on both days the food has been of a very high standard - food in pubs is rarely this good unless you seek out a proper restaurant/gastropub, and I'm quite a discerning critic. You do have to fetch your own cutlery (from the bar, where you order your meal) but the prices are reasonable and the portions quite generous so that can be forgiven.

Highly recommended, whether vegan, vegetarian or die-hard omnivore.

It's so great that a vegetarian/vegan pub of the traditional pub kind exists!

I used to have fond memories.

My last two visits haven't been so positive.

The first, on a busy Sunday afternoon had the issues you would expect. A lengthy wait, bit of pushing and shoving and quite a few customers complaining how they would have to leave without eating as they had trains to catch.

In addition, half the menu was no longer available, and none of the weary looking staff seemed to think that they should try to hurry up on getting cutlery out, or getting drinks poured, or checking on the kitchen. There was no customer service.

The second visit will now be my last.

It was a quieter day, earlier so all menu options were there. I ordered a veggie roast and my partner had fajitas. They were abundant, but the veg was mostly burned. The roast was minimal. No roasted potatoes, instead there were two tiny boiled ones. Any other veg was burnt and there was no gravy, nut roast or stuffing. I wasn't sure how what I had ordered constituted a roast at all. The menu was brief so no description to compare with. The staff were equally lethargic.

It is a real pity.

I happened to pop in the George together with my friends on our way home to London and must say it has changed from the time I saw it the last (which was about 6 moths ago). The pub was clean, it was buzzing and the atmosphere was just fantastic. The kitchen was busy and even though there was a wait on food we didnt mind because it was worth while. The Tapas was giant we couldnt finish it and the spaghetti for under a fiver was just a bargain. The staff was attentive as much as they could. It seemed they were understaffed but they were coping really well and still kept smiles on their faces. Cuttlery was an issue because we had to wait for it after we got out meals.

As a vegan I have been going to the George for some 15 years. Until recently the George has been a popular meeting place and the veggie food legendary. I don't know what has happened but over the last year the place has gone to pot, the food is unreliable in terms of quality and quantity, the staff are surly and the place is dirty. What a shame !

Good food and generous portions and it was great to suffer the agony of choice. Usually you have a choice of two 'Meditteranean' somethings or other but nor here, we'll have to go back again and try one of the other things we wanted. Go in summer though as I agree about the doors. Luckily it was warm when we wen tbut the draught was annoying. The staff cannot smile either. But they were busy.

I've been to The George many times over the last few years and I have to say that 95% of the time it has been perfect. The food is incredible! Especially for the money you pay. Best pub grub I've ever eaten. OK the service may be slow but I'd rather know that my food has not been sitting on a hot plate waiting for my order! They have had a couple of off days, but if your experience has been on one of these days, I would suggest that you return. Along with Terre Terre, also in Brighton, they have to be the 2 best places for vegans to eat!

Really sorry to say that my most recent experience at The George was not good.

The food was ok, on the whole, but not as good as previously. One of the daily specials, a sausage casserole, had such a skimpy amount of sausage that it wasn't much more than a vegetable stew.

But, completely overshadowing the lactlustre food was the way were were made to feel an inconvenience by the staff, and the fact the place was absolutely freezing! We had to sit with our coats on all through lunch.
