Just been there for Sunday lunch. Sorry to report that the quality was poor. I'll start with the food - poor cut of beef, overdone, and a flat Yorkshire pudding! Terrible selection of vegetables - scant nod to soggy cabbage, a few slabs (!) of carrots - again old ad tired and a mushroom, floating idly in a sea of frozen - I'm not joking - peas and bisto-tasting gravy. Appalled to pay £7.95 for such a fiasco.
We asked whether E-J Scott was in residence. Apparantly he was but I find it hard to believe. Have eaten there in the week before and have been happily amazed at the meals presented. Any chef with the credentials he claims to have (Michelin in the south of France?) would have shut the kitchen before serving that.
The service was laughable. Looked like the bar staff had been there too long (this was 4pm in the afternoon) and wanted to be anywhere but there. Nonchalance bordering on down-right rudeness. Didn't give a toss. Hope their night out the night before was good enough to excuse the inexcusable fact that we were treated like aliens who were distracting them from their come-down.
We know the manager from drinking at the DON. We're sure he'll be as livid as we are (but being English far too polite to make a scene) when we see him next and give him the news. Hesitant to write the place off on one bad experience but won't be trying the roasts again!
