Great food and great beer. Serves HSB which is still good despite the sale of the brewer to Fullers.
Had vegetarian sunday roast which was spot on and great value.

I've loved the baskets since the early 80's when I spent far too many evenings in there as a student. Thankfully it hasn't changed much and although it gets busy it's for a very good reason. We've only eaten in there once recently but what we ate was excellent and very reasonably priced and the food generally looks very good. This is a relaxed, friendly, very Brighton pub and I hope it never becomes a themed bar. The clientele is mixed and friendly. I just wish they still had the glass cabinet containing cheese and onion rolls in the corner of the bar which they had in the 80's. They were a great accompaniment to a pint or four of HSB.

Brighton's best kept secret and somewhere I always head for when I go back to my adopted home town. Hidden away from both the tourist hot-spots and the student bars, but still in the heart of the city. I almost didn't post this review as those that know the place know it gets busy enough without any extra publicity.
Friendly staff, a great selection of real ales, a huge selection of spirits (especially whiskey) and excellent home-cooked food crammed into a relatively small pub. On drink alone this is one of the two best pubs in Brighton (the other being the Evening Star) but the food and the comfortable atmosphere make the Basketmakers a little bit special. Go there on New Year if you can, but you'll need to get there early to find a place to stand, and even earlier to grab a seat (i.e. about midday).
