Long-awaited Spanish restaurant now open inside Camberwell's Church Street Hotel.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 - This long-awaited tapas restaurant in the funky Church Street Hotel is a looker: brick walls, Spanish tiles and stained glass add up to somewhere that wouldn't look out of place in Seville...There are some well-executed tapas bar standards: creamy, jamon-packed croquetas, tortilla, a selection of hand-carved hams. But the more intriguing stuff delivers too: mackerel with chermoula and saffron potatoes; or tender sirloin steak on a bed of black beans made meaty and unctuous with pork fat.

Strongly agree with the opinion below, pushy and careless service, unfortunately would not recomend this place.

Eating here was a genuinely unpleasent experience. From the moment we arrived we were sat on a cramped table and harrassed constantly: would you like this, would you like that? A constant stream of tapas then started arriving at our table until every square inch of it was covered. The waitresses then harrassed us constantly: have you finished this, have you finished that? After twenty five minutes the meal was over. Not much of a night out! Arrive 7, finish 7.25. The food was OK, but pretty bland and I felt that the wine was overpriced. I complained to the manager, thinking perhaps it was just an off night, but he didn't seem to care. We then decamped to Johanssen's for dessert and coffee, it was excellent. Should have gone there from the beginning.

Unfortunately had to take a table upstairs which had little atmosphere unlike the downstairs room. Food really good and well priced - and its a really quirky place. Not quite as fabulous food as say Salt Yard or Iberica in town but it is cheaper and lots of character.

I'd been meaning to try this place for a while as we live just round the corner. We went last night for my birthday and had a brilliant time.

The place was packed on a Monday night and ours was the only free table (thankfully we had booked ahead). The food was delicious and interesting, even though it took some time to arrive (the waitress said they were taken off guard with the number of people and graciously gave us some olives while we waited). The wine list was reasonable and charmingly described.

An absolute gem in Camberwell and I would definitely recommend making the trip if you're not local. Our bill with six dishes, a £25 bottle of wine and two glasses of cava came to £65.

My colleagues and I ate here on a Thursday for lunch and decided that we would definitely return and we are already thinking of having our Xmas lunch here. The service was impeccable, the fabulous waitress explained the whole menu patiently and our food was amazing.

Went here on Saturday night with no expectations. It was lovely - the ambience, the decor and the food. The food was brilliant - the sirloin steak with the black beans was beautifully cooked, with the beans almost creamy. Other high points were the croquetas and lamb chops, although all the dishes were good. Even desserts were reportedly good, which is unusual for a tapas bar. I know this sounds a bit like I either own or work at the place but, having found it, I thought I'd look for reviews and really don't think they have done it justice. Go for yourself and find out!

I had high hopes for A&G after having read the favourable reviews in Time Out, The Evening Standard and the local Camberwell Blog. Unfortunately I was totally disappointed with the food.

On a Friday night I was the first one in there with my partner at 6pm so it wasn't busy at all. All the hot dishes came out lukewarm and seemed to be lacking in taste (possibly underseasoned?). The bread we ordered was stale on one side. We could see them cutting the bread and it was on display for diners to see so it would have been better if they cut the stale bits off before serving them.

I thought the price was ok at £50 for two people but personally I would rather spend a little extra and go somewhere like Barrafina for tapas where the food is out of this world.

been waitin for this place to open for absolutely ages. honestly did think it was never gonna happen!! it has now opened and i went with friends last week for an xmas treat. we had such a great time and loved the food. they do some standard tapas like croquetas, tortilla and meat/cheese plates, but also some interesting dishes like mackerel with chermoula and quail with a cognac sauce. honestly we have no complaints and must welcome this new addition to the neighbourhood! we will be back. thanks xx

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 - It certainly looks the part. A beautiful faux stain glass window featuring the eponymous Angels and Gypsies tower over the spacious and bright dining room. Coming in from the cold and rain, we were greeted by a delightful waitress who was as bright and cheery as the room itself...Roast pork belly with rum plum jam and Cox apple salad: My favourite dish was the pork, natch. The slow cooked belly was tender and had a fantastic crackling. Slightly on the flabby side, this didn't put me off from wolfing it down.
