Monday, July 13, 2009 - The brasserie-style menu is long on choice and short on fancy cooking. There's local crab and lobster; mussels - served marinieres, Provencal or Thai-style; Dorset rock oysters at a pound a pop; chargrilled mackerel with citrus butter; and a smattering of meaty and veggie options. The word 'local' appears all over the menu...Brighton foodies have long complained that they don't have enough decent restaurants. Fishy Fishy is a decent mid-market alternative to the existing seafood restaurants, English's and Riddle and Finns. I can imagine that its snug little dining rooms will be a really attractive prospect in winter.

Went for a meal here last month with friends. The food was to an ok standard but I have to say the service was awful, very very slow, which for a week night that wasnt particularly busy wasnt a good sign. I would consider returning again but would expect much better service.

Well i'd read all the previous reviews and decided to give it the benefit of the doubt , wish I hadn,t now , the decor was bland, and we were ushered upstairs to a pokey 2nd floor dining area. The waitress was friendly and helpful but although the food had taste the quantity was appalling. I had catch of the day , a mullet fillet but more like a whitebait fillet it was so small , on a bed of mash that would not of even filled a tea cup saucer, all for £16.50 . My wife had crab , but to actually find any meat was like searching for the holy grail. We both left hungry, and £65.00 lighter in my pocket . Thank heavens there was a Subway near where we parked to fill our appetites.

I visited for the first time last week as I wanted to go to a fish restaurant and to sit outside. Not impressed at all. The food is less than mediocre and the staff pretty self important (maybe it's the celebrity connections!). We had the Brighton baise and fish and chips; if a fish restaurant can’t prepare these two fish restaurant staples then they really need to go back to the drawing board! I eat out a lot and am a big fish fan. Even though there’s limited outdoor seating during the summer months I'll still be hotfooting it back to Riddle and Finns where the cooking is always faultless.

Visited on a sunny Saturday for lunch and sat in the conservatory. Only complaint was there was a bit of cold breeze blasting through but the welcome was warm. Our friendly waiter didn't mind us changing our minds at the last minute for starters, and was very helpful in aiding us to make our choices. A nicely chilled botttle of sauvignon helped us peruse the menu. Moules marinere was shared to start, and although there were a couple of closed shells served, there were still enough to satisfy the both of us. Two small thin slices of bread came to mop up the tasty sauce. After the requested 15 minute break, fish and chips and spicy crab came for the second course. The fish was locally sourced pollock and whiting in a crispy light batter served on a wooden platter with minty mushy peas, tartare sauce and skinny chips. My partner, who is not a fish fan by any means (he was being nice accompanying me there), wolfed the fish down with gusto, proclaiming it was the best fish and chips he'd eaten out in a long while. I tried the peas, which were lovely, but didn't get to taste the fish unfortunately ( I didn't move fast enough!) - it looked lovely. My spicy crab was served in it's shell, accompanied by salad leaves and the same skinny chips. This was also very tasty, although I got quite messy, which the waiter had said would happen. Could have done with the finger bowls we were given with the mussels, but never mind. After another short break we decided to share the lemon and lime posset with hazelnut shortbread. Must admit we could have easily ate one each, this was absolutely scrummy! To finish we had a brandy coffee, which was a bit on the weak side and an espresso which definitely wasn't, but was only a half to two thirds cupful, and a bit mean considering it's such a small cup in the first place! However, overall we had only small criticisms of the place and they could be easily tweaked, and I can say that we had a thoroughly enjoyable time, and will definitely go back.

I love this place and it was only when I was in on Saturday I realised I had never written a review of it..

I love the building - tall and thin and cosy. I love the service - the staff are all well informed about the food and friendly to boot.

It's not cheap - but fish this fresh and varied isn't. I can't recommend enough the boiled Channel crab - it looks amazing and has so much eating in it. It comes with some bread and salad. The first time I had it I had chips as well, but they weren't really necessary. The Brighton Mess is gorgeous.

Every friend that has visited me in Brighton has been taken here. Any excuse and I will be there.

Keep up the good work :-)

wow! what a place, the waitress that served us was so so lovely, that food was out of this world and there was such a great atmosphere!

I had prawns to start and was amazed at how many you got it was fantastic,

Lobster for mains was so tasty and a really good price.

dessert for me though was the icing on the cake! this beautiful melt in your mouth chocolate terrine.

Ive got to mention the staff once more who were fantastic.

I will be back for sure, cant wait to try the rest of this amazing menu!

Nice looking restaurant. Arrogant waiter.

Main course arrived while we were still eating first course.

Food decidedly average apart from cheese which was good.

Good value if you get lucky with food

Great restaurant. Service is impressive in terms of information about the dishes and knowledge of the local seafood. We were also impressed by the ethics of the establishment as only sustainable locally caught produce is sold - something lost on visits to the local competition at riddle and fins.

The food was cooked to a high standard on this first visit and all dished were excellent, although I look forward to exploring the menu further as so far I've not experienced the x factor that makes a great restaurant amazing. Definitely worth visiting again.

On a cold wet January lunchtime the restaurant was busy with the sound of people enjoying themselves, and there is everything to enjoy here. The service is attentive and knowledgeable and the food consistently good. A menu that concentrates on locally caught fish and cooked to a high standard has to be a winner and on each occasion we have visited this has been the case. The mains of skate wing and seabass today were excellant. My only gripe is the salad garnish served with some of the starters, such as the calamari could be a lot better. A limp packeted rocket salad with a bland dressing does nothing to enhance the dish. All in all a really very good restaurant.

Have just eaten in Fishy Fishy and had an absolutely fantatic meal. Service was lovely and the food was devine. I had the skate with a side order of skinny chips if anything the portion of chips was a litle small.....but enough with my fish, my friend had the fish pie she had to stop herself licking out the pot!!!

Then my friend and I shared the "Brighton Mess" pudding which was gorgeous and the perfect way to finish a meal.

Will be definetly going back and cannot wait!! The only way the another visit could be improved is if Dermot serves us himself!!!
