Lovely place and very attentive, friendly staff. Fish and chips were served on a wooden chopping board, bizarre! Fish rather greasy and chips severely lacking potato, a tiny portion of crisp air. Mushy peas were good but cold, tartar sauce was great. Would only go back if Dermot promised to be there!!

A family group of seven ate here on the 27th November. We had a table upstairs (sitting next to Simon Cowells mum, pleasant lady). The room was warm and gave a good dining experience. We started with a very attentive waiter explaing their policy on sustainable/local food.Bread and olive start up all round followed by a mix of oysters, veggie soup, salmon and red mullet entrees. These were all well presented and tasty.Mains were fish/chips, five line caught whole sea bass and fish pie.Again excellent meals particularly the sea bass. With two veggies in the group although fish eaters), one a bit fussy(my wife !!) they were well catered for. Good selection of wines .Overall an excellent dining experience ,the total bill of £350 was a little expensive ,but this did include 5 bottles of good wine and the five sea bass. Downside was the cheese dessert ,we ordered three plates to share ,I could have eaten them all myself, very very small portions for £6.50.
None the less I will definately go again, next time for a lazy lunch after tackling the lanes.

My wife and I visited a couple of Saturdays back fairly early in the evening at 5pm. The choice of starters was ok and I went for Calamari and my wife went for Salmon. Whilst hers was good, mine was bland and half way through I had had enough and found it hard work. A real lack of flavour.
For mains I opted for the fish and chips and my wife went for the crab linguine. The batter on the fish was the greasiest I have ever seen and really overpowered the flavour of the fish. The chips were scarce to say the least. I left the batter and was left feeling hungry and overwhelmed by the fat and grease. The linguine was also flavourless and needed some more garlic or chilli to liven it up.
The service was excellent with really friendly staff and this couldn't be faulted. The food was well below average and the whole meal cost £50 so not the best value.
At the end we were both disappointed!. Sorry Dermot!

An excellent meal! We booked the night before for lunch to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary and the lady who took my call was charming. Our very attentive and helpful waiter gave us the choice of a table outside which was a great place to sit and people watch! The menu leaves you spoilt for choice and is very reasonably priced. The food was delicious and we had 3 courses each all of which were perfect. This is definitely a restaurant we will return to whenever we can although we live near London. Highly recommended.

We were recommended this restaurant by the hotel concierge so we were keen to try it.
We wanted an early dinner and, although we hadn't booked, we were hopeful we could get a table at 6pm. On arriving at the door we were dismissivly greeted by the owner who said we could have a table outside as they were fully booked inside.
Waitress was great, giving details of the dishes and taking our order.
However, the food was very poor. The mackerel pate was dry, the Brightonbaisse tastless and watery, the spiced crab had so much chilli you couldn't taste the crab and the pan fried mackerel was small and extraordinarily expensive for a what it was.
The only good part was the dessert - pear tart - which I suspect they bought in.
Suggest you avoid and try Englishes next door.

Well it is new, so four of us tried it out on a sunny monday afternoon. It was fairly busy, but no where near full. The waitress was great, but it was very slow which was what we were after Our Oyster pre stater took a long long time. The starters were good, mains very good and then we were full.
It will be worth waiting a little longer for them to iron out their kitchen, but we all throught a promising start.

My partner and I had lunch there today (3rd August), we arrived at 1.30 pm and we waited 10 minutes or so before we were given a menu.
The drinks and bread took an additional 10 minutes or so, and we were then waiting over an hour before our lunch arrived, by which time I had finished most of my bread. The explanation was that the kitchen was busy.
The service was not very attentive and although out waitress was very pleasant, she was over stretched and I thought let down by colleagues who did not appear to do very much.
My parter had the lobster which was very small and over priced at £15.50 and. although my fish and chips were okay, the peas were not proper mushy peas, they were cold and had too much mint.
Two glasses of wine I ordered were very small, no more than 125 mls and the cheese and fruit we also ordered to share was minute to say the least ( 3 small pieces of cheese and half a pear) and certainly not worth £6.95.
Overall this was a dissappointing experience, and I spent a long time looking at the large and decent looking portions of fish and chips at the adjacent restaurant.
£50 for lunch for two mains and one tiny cheese plate, (excluding tip) was way over priced for what was essentially mediocre food which took a very long time to come.
I doubt if I will be back

Fantastic! We sat outside, mid-week, mid-afternoon and shared a grilled squid with ginger which was deliciously tender. For mains, my partner had perfectly pan-fried Brill (which I will have next time), while I had the fish and chips - generous hunks of lightly battered fish (pollock and plaice) served on a wooden board with a pot of french fries and little bowls of caper mayonnaise and freshly mashed peas - yum! I think I'm right in thinking all the fish served is is all 'sustainable' AND sourced locally - well done! I loved both of our charming and attentive waiters almost as much as the little "Fishy Fishy" rock sweeties which arrived with the very reasonable bill. Refreshingly, service is not included but we were delighted to leave a cash tip knowing it would go direct to the staff. Definite 10/10! We have booked a table for this Saturday and are really looking forward to our 2nd visit.
