Browns Restaurant & Bar

Went to Brown's recently for a birthday celebration, and had the most wonderful duck confit. It was brilliant.
The staff are a bit odd though. Very condescending.

Eight of us went here on New Year's Eve and the experience was superb. I have been several times before and, as other comments suggest, you occasionally get a poor dish (or, my key complaint, arrogant/overly chummy waiters) but the set menu was superb. The lamb was probably the best I've ever had, the waiter on his best behaviour, and the atomosphere was jolly but not too raucous.
I really hope this place gets back on track in 2008- it certainly made a good start on New Year's.

I don't live in Brighton, and go to this restaurant about 3-4 times a year. However everytime i have been it has been good. The atomsphere is relaxed even though it is always pretty busy. The food is not 5 star but it is good quality, nicely presented and value for money. They have a good choice on the menu and overall I would recommend it.

This branch of Browns really lets the chain down. After a history of superb meals at the Cambridge and Covent Garden restaurants, I was astonished at the appalling quality of the food and service here - such a contrast!! If you think your customers can't tell when their food has been microwaved, you are wrong. We can. Aren't microwaves for fast food joints?!? That alone has put me off returning to the Brighton Brown's. The fact that our waiter served our meals as if we were farmyard animals being tossed our daily rations merely added insult to injury. I would love to see this restaurant improve its standards to meet others in the chain - then I'll be back.

What happened here then?
This place used to be famous for real quality. Their Steak and Stout pie was legendary and their burgers were incredible. The waiters and waitresses were excellent and the place had a real buzz about it. I'm glad to say the service is still brilliant but the food is poor now . First of all, the portion size has roughly halved in the last few years. The beautiful lamb chump steak they used to do isnt a chump anymore. Mine was the thickness of a 'minute' steak and my vegetables were very obviously microwaved. People do microwave vegetables, I do when im in a hurry but I dont want to go to a decent restaurant and be served them.
I think people want to be given something better than they can cook at home.
By the way, this wasnt a weekend when i could normally find an excuse to defend with. It was an averagely busy Thursday evening. My girfriend said her vegetarian option was boiling hot in the middle and overly hard at the edges of the pastry, once again consistent with microwaving.
Come on guys, you've managed to retain good staff somehow but they will get disheartened if customers like me say to them the food they are having to serve isnt befitting of them.

Was very shocked by this restaurant, asked for a medium steak came blue! and when I asked for it to be altered / cooked it was given back microwaved! what a disgrace!
