It's hard to find fault with this place. The restaurant is tiny but does have some outside tables. Whilst this might be seen as a fault, it actually adds to the charm and this place is special enough that I'd be happy to keep it that way. Food is very fresh, healthy and above all tasty.
Most main dishes are just over £4 and basically are a standalone meal so its a very good lunch option and inexpensive. I would say that average spend for a bigger meal would be no more than £7-£8 per person. But as you just order and pay, you can keep on ordering until you have had enough.
No alcohol is served there.

Gosh, I just love this place. Never have I been so addicted to dishes in a resteraunt, thank god they're healthy! Haha.
The tofu don dishes are incredible, I would definately reccomend the sesame and the honey and ginger ones. The rice is always perfect and the service is so friendly, and despite it being a bit of a squeeze if you're a party of more than two (maybe three. Sit upstairs! It's not as hot and there's more space between tables) the atmosphere is pretty nice.
Perfect for a lunch stop while roaming town, maybe not so much for planned meals out in groups. You can take out though, which is nice!
Make sure you bring cash though, as they don't take cards.

Oh my goodness! I have been a bit disappointed in my visits to restaurants recently, but I was very impressed with Pompoko at lunchtime today.
I went on my own and didn't want too much to eat but something exciting and yummy. Pompoko really did come up trumps. I started with the honey bbq ribs. They were dainty bite size pieces with the right sweetness without being too sickly. Then I had the Chicken Sesame Don which came in a reasonable sized bowl and tasted amazing. With the main dishes at less than a fiver it's fine for a lunchtime or you could choose several for a more substantial evening feast with friends.
The young Japanese female servers were very friendly and helpful.
This was the perfect relaxed, casual, lunchtime meal, definitely excellent value for money. Why are there not more restaurants like this in the centre of Brighton?
I will be back soon!

This is a great little place, yes its a bit cramped and small but its not trying to be a top of the range restaurant.
Its really cheep but the food is good, the portions aren't huge but it's so cheep you can just order two meals!
This is the place to go for authentic japanese food.

Dined at Pompoko for the first time today and will be sure to return.
The restaurant had a friendly atmosphere, with some authentic japanese decorative touches which added to the appeal.
The meals came out extremely quickly, all the dishes we ordered were of a high quality with some exceptional flavours.
All main courses are priced under £5, so value for money is guaranteed.

I came here last night, great food with a fairly wide selection of dishes and specials to chose from, the gyoza dumpling starter was especially good. Nice staff too even though they were pretty busy, which for a Monday is always a good sign. Have eaten here before and can't think why it has taken so long to return!
Be warned if you're over 6 foot tall though as the ceilings are pretty low, but this somehow adds to the charm. Great place, highly recommend it.

Another one of Brighton's unsung gems, Pompoko is a very worthwhile visit. Always manned by cheerful, attentive & helpful waiting staff, the food is good, honest, quick, & tasty, served in surroundings which I imagine might equate to a Japanese version of a bistro. If you're ever in the vicinity of the Dome then look across the road & there it is.
Orders are taken at the counter, food delivered to your table.
