Well, went as many others I expect due to the hype created by Kitchen Nightmares, also have the Soul in a Bowl cookbook which is great. On the whole ok, and buffalo chicken wings amazing but some things not quite as good.... we went for soul in a bowl and were asked by our waitress if we wanted meat or vegetarian option and if we had any allergies. We advised meat but no prawns, and were impressed at them asking. Unfortunately the re-heated jambalaya came out with prawns included as it obviously hadn't been made to order. The macaroni cheese came in a bowl on a dish because the whole thing had been zapped in the microwave and was so hot, and our bbq ribs were cold. To summarise: starters very nice, mains disappointing, dessert really nice (flapjack with hot toffee sauce). Also the service wasn't great but the 'optional' service charge is already on your bill when it arrives and our waitress wasn't up for discussing it coming down at all. Atmosphere good but the place could do with some sprucing up and obviously used to be a chinese restaurant as has a very out of place fake orange tree upstairs that must have come with the building.

I sadly have to agree with the other reviewer's opinions... please don't go there! The prices are ridiculous - you do get big portions but the food is bland and not cooked very well. It was really, really disappointing!

Totally disappointing, nearly infuriating experience. Average food for the prices executed, horrible service, long waiting times. Honestly, my own food (I am not even a reasonable cook) has more soul than that.

Upon arrival the staff are happily still wrapped up with the 5 minutes of fame it once had. Its a shame as this place appears to have lost its way through the fame of TV appearances with Momma Cherri's soul shack. The 'good honest food' is no more, somewhere down the line it used to turn out good fun and some respectable house specials however it seems that its all just a fuzzy nostalgic memory of what was.

How long can this place last on novelty.... will it ever remember how to turn out the those colourful soulful bowls of delight again?

Very strange place - you couldn't choose what you wanted. There was too much meat in the 4 bowls offer part of the menu only one little bowl of rice, which by the way was lovely. The chicken was very average and the service bland, i wouldn't go there again.

A truly dreadful experience, the worst meal I have ever eaten. If you like luke warm reheated fried food then this is the place for you. The waitress had too many tables to look after so service was very slow, she did the best she could under tough conditions. Dont go there expecting a quick meal. Dont go for the soul in a bowl either as it tasted like they made up a batch that morning and just scooped the bits out as and when it was ordered. Best avoided as there are so many other great restaurants in Brighton that dont have the benefit of free advertising from Channel 4 and then dont follow the advice they get about how to provide what people want.

Loveley friendly greeting with a warm atmosphere. The food was fantastic from start to finish, delicious flavours combined masterfully. We would definately reccommend, and we will certainly go again
