I had really looked forward to eating here but was bitterly disappointed.

The crab cakes were greasy and lukewarm, and so were the scallops.

Also, it was all a bit of a rip-off, I felt. And the staff weren't friendly.

Loved it in Riddles & Fin Brighton. A really nice atmosphere, quite buzzy and the Oysters were gorgeous. Really enjoyed the experience and will go back for a special occassion.

First visit on Novenber 29th.Excellent food and service, both squid dishes were superb, hot and cooked just right the best we have eaten for many a day.

Mussels for a main were fine and enjoyable but after the squid nothing exceptional and many do them better, would prefer in a couldron rather than a plate as they cool quicly.

Friendly staff and fun atmosphere would definately go again

This restaurant is having a laugh!......If you like to feel hungry at the end of a meal and feel as if you have been mugged then this restaurant is most definately for you! What a great location for the new Riddle and Finns in Hove........where by the way you will not have a "voluntary "donation to the hungry and homeless added onto you bill.

I must say I am extremely surprised by the previous review - they must have had the misfortune of visiting Riddle & Finns on a very rare 'off' day, as I have thoroughly enjoyed it on every visit, and the most recent one was no exception. Both the service and food were excellent as always, and the salt and pepper squid was particularly tasty. Even on a cold, dark day like the one on which I visited, the atmosphere is very welcoming, with the beautiful chandeliers and candle sticks creating a rosy glow from the outside looking in, which I defy anyone to resist. This is affordable luxury at its best and as a Hove-dweller I am thrilled to see that a Hove branch is opening soon, and I can't wait!

A few weeks ago myself and two friends went for lunch to Riddle and Finns.

We all ordered the set two course £9.99 lunch.

On reading the small print on the menu I found that there was a cover charge (but interestingly the tables have no covers) Although only £1 per person I do object to paying this charge for some bread especially when no mention of the charge was made by the waitress.

On ordering wine it was found that no house wine was available...the cheapest was £15.95 (although there as a British wine available for £13.95)

The first course was chowder which was in reality a thin soup with only a hint of fish.

It was the main course that absolutely took our breath away .....the smallest fillet of fish ever seen.... on a bed of beans. It was literally four mouthfulls.

How the waitress could have have placed these "meals" in front us with a straight face is beyond me. We certainly were not amused.

We all felt we had been mugged and had to adjourn to pret a porter for a sandwich.

To cap it all on studying the bill we found that Riddle and Finns were feeling in a charitable mood and had decided to charge all customers an extra £1 to give to their (Riddle and Finns) favourite charity.

We declined this further insult.

A memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.

I have been to Riddles & Finns 3 times, twice with my friends and their kid and once with my girl friend. In my first visit, I have found the food average, service was good and friendly, hence went there again.

However, it was a complete shocker when I took my girlfriend there. We walked in at around 17:30 and there was only one other table with 3 people in the whole restaurant. We have been shown a table (which was for four people, they don't have a smaller table btw), and I sat on one side and my girfriend sat on the other side of the table. Soon the waiter approached and asked us to sit next to each other not facing each other!!! How bizzare eh?! His excuse was that usually the restaurant gets full in the evenings and that we have to share the table with others. I told him that there are only 3 other customers in the restaurant and we would be happy to change our seating plan if we have to share the table with others but only if they (customers) prefers sitting next to eachother as well. Reasonable? No it wasn't according to the waiter! He insisted that we sit side-by-side. I found it extremely annoying for a waiter to insist a customer in that way and not being flexible at all (in an empty restaurant!).

So all in all, it was a complete disappointment and I would never but never go there again. One should expect good service especially in places where prices are above the average.

On the food end, I have had clam chowder in my first two visits, they were not same soup at all, i got the expression then that they were using leftovers. I have no trust on their kitchen either.

Don't go there!

Riddle & Finns is a superb place with the freshest and most delicious dishes, friendly and exeptional service. I can recommend their Salt&Pepper Squid - delicious. But then again no matter which starter you pick you will enjoy each of them.

We really like seafood so were really pleased with the range and quality of the fruits de mer platter we ordered. It is brilliant to able to at last get this kind of quality in the uk - really top notch oysters, crab, clams, razor clams, winkels and whelks. The restaurant space too is really well done, all gleaming tiles and sliver candle sticks. However, one thing I really hated was the very loud, bass-heavy, club-style music that they insist on playing. It was like being a slave on a Roman galley, a driving rhythm pounding urging you to eat faster. I read a quote about Riddle and Finn's business philosophy online which stated that they are attempting to go for a Yo Sushi style dining experience. I wish I'd known because I can't stand any of this eat-to-the-beat stuff. It just encourages everyone around you to bellow, whoop and bray at each other above the din. I complained to the manager, and to be fair the music did get turned down but I sensed it was reluctantly. Perhaps other people enjoy eating in a nightclub atmosphere and maybe it makes money. The whole experience just reinforced my feeling that the dining scene in Britian is rarely about enjoying food but rather about trying to engineer an atmosphere where inhibitions and wallets are loosened. Most customers seem to be quite happy with this though. We finished our meal and felt it was fair-ish value, but left feeling rather alienated. Does anyone know where I can get a decent assiette de fruit de mer without the whole corporate dining experience?
