Seeing a magazine article featuring my old college friend Ben McKellar, I thought I'd pay his restaurant a visit and say hi in the process. Despite getting mildly lost en route, we reached the Ginger Pig bang on 9pm, finding a nearly full set of covers and a convivial ambience, immediately setting the tone for a great evening. Despite the outward appearance of a large pub, the inside was all restaurant; the tables packed in fairly close but not too close for comfort. The revolving wooden doors and high ceiling added to the charm of the place, and the food was no let down either.

I started with the sumptuous Pig's Head Croquettes, perfectly crispy and oozing flavour. Following this I had the Cod with a Chorizo and Parmesan crust, accompanied by a decent pile of creamy olive oil mash. The fish was delicious and the crust set off the cod's subtle flavour to perfection. To finish I sampled the Rarebit with Sussex Ale - as a lover of both cheese and good beer this was absolute heaven, and the portions were no less than ample.

With an extensive wine list, attentive (but not overly so) service, and food that represented good value for money, the whole experience was hugely positive; a chat with the Head Chef and owner himself topped the evening off wonderfully.

We have been to the Pig a few times but thing seem to have stepped up a notch! Staff were really efficient bringing things quickly without fussing, asked if they could clear plates each time and were very pleasant and professional.

Grapefruit marinated salmon. It looked great – it looked like a little Japanese garden, colourful and lots of little finishing touches. Only very slight criticism was that the salmon was quite fishy. Don’t know if this was intended and it wasn’t unpleasant but just a little strong for me.

Hake with herb crusted scallops for main was really nicely presented with the little arrangement of scallop, dollop of puree and almond on each side. Great flavours, cooked perfectly. I had the pork which was a portion size as although there was plenty of pork I finished it all and didn’t feel too full.

Pudding is always my fav dish! I had steamed chocolate pudding with custard and ice-cream. A little pudding in a sea of custard with a scoop of ice cream balanced on top covered in chocolate sauce. The pudding itself wasn’t very warm but tasted delicious!

I could not resist polishing off half my partners blood orange sponge with orange cream & whisky ice cream!! An amazing pudding.

We were so impressed with the presentation. It seemed to have gone up a few notches since we last ate there. Very artistic without being fussy.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I recently visited the Ginger Pig for dinner and contrary to some of the reviews I have read on this site, I found it a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

My partner and I both had the Squid to start which was perfectly cooked and very tasty, I followed by roasted pork belly that melted in your mouth and my partner had pan fried Sea Bass and we shared a hot chocolate pudding that was to die for!

I found the staff extremely helpful and would definitely go back.

I visited The Ginger Pig on a friday lunchtime and am extremely surprised at the moderate reviews I have subsequently read on this site. The food, all three courses, was exceptional and the service beyond reproach. All of the young ladies working that afternoon were friendly and knowledgeable. One in particular, I believe her name was Moira, was of invaluable assistance with my elderly mother who has dietary issues that could test the patience of a saint. Moira not only suggested appropriate dishes but also altered and mixed different items on the menu to suit my mothers requirements and tastes. The end result and the good humour and grace with which it was all presented left my mother replete and in a jovial mood I havent seen for months. I would highly recommend The Ginger Pig for any occasion, be it formal or otherwise, and would like to send my personal thanks to all the staff for their kindness and patience. I look forward to my next visit and will report back to this site shortly after.

i had a really nice night planned for my other half on valentines nights which included a nice meal in the Ginger Pig.

I'm not going to say that my experience spoiled our night because Brighton has a way of making you forget the bad bits, but I will say I will give this place a miss in future.

The food was pre cooked and had to be sent back. The same rejected plate then came back over heated and ruined.

The staff seemed over familiar, this was their place, not the customers. I felt belittled, rushed and pressured into accepting sub-standard food. After sending my cold main back, I also felt the daggers hitting my back.

My opinion? Visit if Mcdonalds is closed.

I would have to say that I was rather disappointed with the service and food, after such "good recommendations" from work colleagues.

The wait staff came across as too cool for school, with a 'we are superior' vibe oozing from them.

Of the four main courses, one was cooked in correctly, asked for a well done steak and it came out barely medium rare, and a game pie that was cold in the middle. We gave this to the staff to be corrected, the same steak was re cooked and brought out, the pie got put in a microwave until it would inflict third degree burns which made the pastry soggy and unappetising.

They said the manager would come speak to us, which did not happen, and when we asked for the bill, after a 20 minute wait we had to go to the counter to pay our £100 + bill, we were not even greeted with how was your meal or a thanks.

So I would say that this place is as over rated as it is over priced, and would not recommend anyone I know and feel rather sick with how much cash I wasted at this venue.

Overall disappointment after much recomendation.

Food: Venison tartare starter was pleasant enough, though served with thick wedge of one side toasted wholegrain bread which rendered the venison untasteable when eaten together, A crisp lavash would have worked much better.

Partridge main course was overcooked one side but pink on the other.

Sea bass again overcooked, soggy skin instead of crisp. Celeriac puree good.

Samphire good. Heavy, dull quenelle of mash with delicate white fish - no thanks. (menu didn't specify this)

Service: Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant, although no check-backs on any course. Tall male waiter annoyingly kicked my chair leg 5 times when walking past, no apology.

Atmosphere: Really good Friday night atmosphere, full dining room, relaxed feel. The lighting is very dark though due to the heavy crimson lamp shades and it was very hard to see what was on the plate!

Value: £71 - cook the same at home for half the price and twice the quality.

Having been previously disappointed with my experience at The Ginger Pig being such a fan of The Ginger Fox we thought we'd try again since 2 years had passed since our last visit.

I enjoyed it. The days specials I thought were the most attractive dishes available on an otherwise uninspiring menu. Desserts were fantastic. Would definitely revisit.

Great, friendly service and welcome!

Gourmet Chick - 7/10

Monday, January 04, 2010 - The ox tounge and cheek with cannelloni delivered a huge serving of offal along with an accompaniment of buttered spinach. The dish was perfectly executed but my only complaint was that it was a little too meat/offal heavy as the cannelloni itself was also filled with oxtail. A better option was the cod from the specials board. This dish featured a cod fillet balanced on top of bite sized roasted potatoes and gussied up with some salsa. The emphasis was good sense over high style but the fish was fresh and firm and the potatoes fluffy on the inside with crispy exteriors.
