The food and the service is anything but gourmet! The waiter we had was rude and bordering on aggressive. The food is greasy, overpriced, swimming in oil...don't bother...

Surprisingly good food and service!

After a pleasant coastal walk from Rottingdean myself and my lady popped into here with some trepidation...we were hungry, but chain-style restaurants in modern complexes are so often poor in food quality, service and atmosphere. This place was very good, we'd eat there again.

We both had huss, smallish portions but perfectly cooked, with plenty of golden crispy chips that rate right up with the best fish I've ever had. Certainly equal ticker to Loves, the sadly now shut place in Kemptown that Ramsay sorted out, y'know - with the "Lovey" actor fella who couldn't run a bath til then...and supposedly got sunk by the credit crunch.

We didn't wait long (ok it was mid afternoon in Feb and quiet) and was super hot...so silly me for scoffing too quick and burning my mouth! Plenty of mushy peas, and decent value overall.

Shame the ketchup was runny Daddies..nothing beats Heinz.

Waiter and waitress both friendly, and interesting to hear about celebs who have nipped in or around the cafe...including Steve Coogan sitting by his name on the window.....or was it Alan Patridge?

We visited the Gourmet Fish restaurant shortly before Christmas following a recommendation from friends who had eaten there, and I can certainly say that this recommendation was well-founded as the meal was superbly cooked, the hospitality and friendliness of the staff excellent and very welcoming and attentive and they'd even gone to the trouble of providing home-made mulled wine which they were offering to customers in the run up to Christmas on the house, a nice touch and gesture which you don't often see these days. I had a starter of delicious garlic breaded mushrooms followed by plaice and chips, the chips are some of the best I've ever tasted, and my wife had a hot and spicy chicken wrap which she said was to die for! We both had apple and blackberry crumble with ice cream which was lovely too. Very Gourmet, very professional, am recommending it to everyone we know and will be returning for more of the same!

There is nothing Gourmet about this restaurant! My partner, two children and I were extremely disappointed both with the food and the attitude of the owner / manager when we complained. We ordered hot chicken breast salad for the adults and sausage and chips for the children. The chicken was reformed chicken in a coating, the sausage was swimming in grease and the chips were cheap frozen variety!! Even the sauces on the table are from a supermarket which sums up the lack of quality of this 'so called' Gourmet restaurant. When I politely mentioned I was unhappy with the reformed Chicken being described as breast the waitress got the manager who came out and agressively berrated me for having complained! The manager/owner seemed to have a complete contempt for his customers and didn't mind at all that his agressive rant upset the children. We left without eating or paying apart from for the drinks we had already started! Enter this place at your peril but if you are foolish enough to order this low quality junk food don't dream of complaining as you are likely to be on the receiving end of an agressive rant!

We were visiting Brighton for a few days with my mom and my family. Mom was delighted as she got such a bargain - the pensioners special that they run every Tuesday - she had cod, chips and a pot of tea for £5.95. She is just gutted there isn't one in her home town of Yorkshire to the same standard. Well worth a visit, best fish and chips we have had in a very long time. Next time we are down in Brighton we will certainly go and eat there. Everything is cooked to order so you do have to wait rather than having it sitting there under a hot plate. I was watching my weight so I opted for the steamed cod, salad and their lovely home made coleslaw and it was delicious. I did steal a few of moms chips and they were delicious. They have quite a wide range of other food that you can have too, from toasted sandwiches to traditional fish and chips but gourmet style. Great, love it!!!

My family recently had a lovely meal at this restaurant and were very pleasantly suprised. We had a platter for 2 and ordered meals for the kids too. The kids fish fingers are home made which is such a refreshing change today and the kids loved them. The kids also loved the ice-cream milk shake. Our only mistake was ordering food for the kids as we had enough in the platter to feed the little ones too. We opted for their lovely home made coleslaw and the tartare sauce which is also home made too and it was delicious. Sadly we did not have enough room for a pudding. Its a shame that so many people have forgotten the old fashioned fish and chips, so was such a pleasant change for all of us instead of the usual chain of eateries that we usually opt for. We most certainly will go back. I don't normally write reviews but felt its a shame in our society today that we only point out the bad things and forget to say the good things. I have to say the best chips that I have had in years. Even the chips were really good.

I have just been to the Gourmet Fish and Chip Company and wished i hadn't bothered. Our order consisted of Cod and chips, Haddock and chips, one bread basket and 2 bottles of sparkling water.

When the meal arrived i was astounded. The 2 pieces of fish were so thin it was just like eating pure batter, the chips were FROZEN prepacked things which could have been bought from any supermarket and they could not even be bothered to serve me with the bread basket. Having struggled through the fish my partner and i couldn't eat the CHIPS they were awful. Having complained to a Man who i assume was the manager he just appologised for not sending the bread order and then charge me £15-90 for 2 awful pieces of fish and 2 inedible portions of chips. I do hope that if you take the time to read this review that you will save yourselves a lot of dissapointment and money and use a PROPER fish and chip shop. There was no offer of a refund for the inedible chips just a statement of well you are in a minority of our customers as most of them like our chips. ps the bottled water was ok. pps he did try and charge me for the undelivered bread basket

This restaurant has certainly changed hands and we were left totally disappointed not to mention hungry.

We opted for haddock and chips and I had to leave the majority on my plate. The batter was hard and tasted acrid like the fat needed changing, the haddock was tough at the ends from over frying and the chips were a very poor aunt bessies on a bad day. The most laughable thing was charging us 95p for a tablespoon of peas presented in a white dish complete with it's own microwaved water at the bottom.

One word to sum up the whole experience from the sauces to the drinks was CHEAP, the bill however was not and came to £22.35.

This restaurant has recently changed hands but the service is just as welcoming as it always used to be. We both opted for no nonsense haddock with chips and mushy peas and weren't disappointed. The fish was fresh, and the chips were lovely - proper fat chips, just as they should be! Very good value for money. Nothing fancy but basic good old fish n chips. Recommended.
