I took my girlfriend to Muang Thai recently for a celebratory birthday dinner recently. We had actually been intending to go to the Thai restaurant further up Upper St. James Street, but it was raining and so we opted for Muang Thai. First impressions of the environment were quite positive, but the lack of space downstairs meant that we were the only customers sitting upstairs, which is somewhat lacking in atmosphere and a bit tatty. Nevertheless, the food and service were excellent. My beef in red curry had exactly the right balance of spce and creaminess - delicious! My girlfriend, who is a vegetarian commented on the good range of veggie options - her pad tai was also very tasty. Contrary to some of the reviews on here, the service was prompt, friendly and helpful.

All in all, we would certainly recommend this place, but it's worth booking and making sure you get a seat downstairs.

Looking for thai, then muang thai is as good as it gets.Fair being fair, the service does go down at busy times. I have been to lots of thai restuarants in brighton. They all suffer the same issues. But for me busy is good, because that means the food is great which is my motto.

The food is as fresh as being in thailand itself. Try the spicy pork salad,it is heaven. They have unique plate decor of fresh veg and traditional thai seating.

My suggestion is go early and enjoy the quiet period before the mob arrives. The waitress are definately good at what they do,and offer excellent suggestions for a splendid evening. For me, food quality is priority before service. You cannot fault this place for the food. The chefs are definately First Class. If this original thai restaurant has survived this long ,it will last long before all the others shut down in competition. As they say, original is always best !!

I really don't get this place, the food is great,it's clearly busy,so how can they get the service so off the beaten track(not in a good way).we had to send our order back four times to get what we wanted, which with an average wait time of 40 mins per dish it was really frustrating. It wasn't even like we were being picky,we wanted a green curry not a red.

After revisiting this week, exactly the same thing happend. The waitress just shrugged and asked if we wanted to wait for another. We left feeling like we had been pioneering the sequel to "groundhog day". bad luck or is a serious kick up the butt for service needed?

If we had recieved what we had ordered we would have been happy as the quality of the food seemed good. If fact, after a long wait a red curry instead of a green appeared. If this had been the first time it could have been an honest mistake, but the last time we went the exact thing happened. Last time we complained and were given a further 4 dishes that were wrong before the green curry finally appeared! this time we decided against it as the staff had recognised us and had obviously decided to take the piss. We wanted to give this place a second chance, but were rewarded with a rubbish night out. Service seriously needs to be sorted out, and customer relations could certainly be improved!

I really enjoyed my meal here. Lovely fresh thai salad and best veg green curry I have had. Service nice and unhurried. I'll definitely return

The best chicken rice noodle soup in Brighton. Sour not sweet, with fresh herbs and dried onions.

Went with friends and opted for the set menus..Food was very yummy..Lots of variety within the set menu thus giving anyone the feel for all the various ranges from chicken to pork to rice to noodles..Fantastic value..The starters was beautifully presented and along with the main dishes..The dessert( banana in coconut cream) was lovely..Staff were extremely friendly and service with a beautiful smile..I would now choose this restaurant for my favourite Thai in Brighton..The gem of Kemp Town..Authenticity at its best..

And try out the lowered seating..Thai Style..Not experienced it anywhere else..

Been going to Muang Thai regularly for the past two years and they have not let me down yet. it is true their service might slow down when they get busy but is it not the case with all restaurants?

the food is excellent and beautifully presented. the staff is very friendly and offered deserts for us on my birthday free of charge which was a nice surprise. i recommend the red curry and coconut rice - you wont find it anywhere better in town!

going out again tonight for a special one but cannot find a nice restaurant that would suit the budget and be good food for sure, so might just go with Muang Thai again.

yes, and try the lowered table seats!

Went last night, but never again.

Lovely food as always, but totally let down by the awful service. Started well, but as the restaurant got busier the service disappeared. Tried for almost 20 mins to get the bill, including going up to the till, only to be told quite brusquely that they were adding it up and to wait. When it did finally come (after 30 mins), we were horribly overcharged (£56 for a £42 meal). We complained to the surly waitress, who came back with a new bill. Even then, though, the 'service' charge had already been added to it, but with no actual indication of this on the bill itself. Paid just for the food, with no service, and left feeling very disappointed with the dreadful service and attempted rip off.

The food is terrific. I like the atmostphere and the taste of food most. Its just like you walk into a dining house in Thailand. It's just real Thai.
