Okinami

Overpriced sushi and sashimi - I went with two friends, we spent a lot of money and all went home hungry, feeling like we'd been taken for a ride.
The food is pretty good and the place looks great but there are much better places for sushi in Brighton that cost a lot less!

This review is of the shop, some reviews on this site actually refer to the restaurant which used to be in Hove but is now relocating to Brighton! Near the Theatre Royal, Hurry Up we miss the food. Well the shop is a great find as we now can buy the Okinami range of suaces and salad dressing and wow suddenly its so easy to make a Japanese dinner party. The staff in the shop were very helpful and when I told them I wanted to make salmon teriyaki just like in the restaurant they advised me to just buy their teriyaki sauce, grill the fish after lightly seasoning, then drizzle teriyaki when fish is 90 % cooked and grill for a few minutes ( or fry) and voila, perfect. You can also get takeaway deli stuff and lots of whacky pickles, and cakes and sweets. Oh yes and wasabi peas, wasabi crackers, wasabi seaweed snacks, just go and have a look at www.okinami.com.
The other day when it was really horrible outside I went and had a hot miso soup and a veg set sushi for £3.60, eating upstairs overlooking St.Peters church and the madness of London Rd. That was strange as the beautiful tables were from the restaurant in Hove!

Went on a cold Thursday night, fantastic sashimi and sushi, I recomend the grilled chicken teriyaki and probably the best fried noodle I have ever had. Reasonably busy with a nice chilled out atmosphere, the music was cool ambient and modern, like the interior. Service was good, and the staff understanding.

Overpriced sushi and sashimi, service was really poor, we were the first in there and waitress was slow and forgetful. Although meals were ok, certainly not worth the price list and all in all left feeling negative and hungry. Only plus side:- The free origami.

The food here is consistently delightful. Lovely fresh sashimi, a brilliant salad dressing, huge bowls of noodles. Service is always charming and swift. Highly recommended.

i walk past this place twice a day and never dared to go in, it looks so intimidating! but when i finally decided to have a proper look, i found this Japanese shop/delicatessen totally amazing! they've got everything Japanese you'd ever wish to get, and even more! the staff was very helpful and eager to share their knowledge of Japanese civilisation, and very honest, they didn't push me to buy stuff i didn't need. i also found out that okinami's actually cheaper than yum yum (where i used to get my instant noodles before...), which you wouldn't tell by the posh looking shop front. anyway, great place.
