Visited this restaurant last Friday, as one, they were in the Friday Argus voucher last week, and two, the good reviews on this site. After asking them the opening hours and receiving the good news that they are available from 11.00am to 10.30pm, we adjourned to the Pumphouse for a snifter and read of the paper. Not very impressed with the refurb in the pub - no comfy seats anymore. Anyway, we trotted back to The House and were warmly welcomed into a lovely setting. The room is bright and fairly spacious, the table set beautifully and all the staff were smiling, efficient and friendly, with a special mention for Joanna. She helped make our eating experience that much more enjoyable; lovely lady. We thought we would skip starters, as we wanted to try the fillet steak Ischitana recommended by a previous reviewer. Well, accompanied by a lovely bottle of red, this was served butterflied into three slices, in a scrummy brandy, wine and cream sauce, cooked just how we had asked - medium to well done for him and rare to medium for me - and we both agreed, the best steak we've eaten out in a very long while. The new potatoes were replaced by garlic potatoes at no extra charge, and the side dish of broccoli was so generous, there was enough left over to pass to two other diners on another table! After sharing the affogato sweet, that we really didn't have room for, but it'd be rude not to, we left, happy, replete and looking forward to our next visit. Thoroughly recommended - top notch!

We had a fantastic meal here. Very atmospheric, some really nice art on the walls, and really well cooked food.

I had fried Calamari, which were beautifully crisp and fresh, followed by a Fillet steak that actually came exactly how I asked for it - nice and Rare, tender and delicious.

The service was attentive, relaxed and friendly. It really makes a difference when the staff are obviously experienced.

The main restaurant is slightly hidden behind the main square, but it's really worth finding it if you want an excellent value for money meal in the heart of Brighton.

Wow! We booked the restaurant for its seemingly cosy appearance on the internet and because of the proximity to our hotel. It was perfect for our celebration. They accomodated our large party of 14 with ease. The staff could not have been more helpful and truly well organised.

The food was delicious, all of the steak and fish dishes arrived perfectly cooked and all in accordance with our requests.

I am puzzled by the July review as we went in August 08 and could not fault the service and food.

Although we were a large party I would love to return with my other half as it would be equally suitable for couples. Order the Steak Ischitana!

The House is horrible. We were a party of 5, 4 of who ordered fish & chips and one who ordered the bruschetta. The fish had all the taste (bland) and shape (uniform) of being pre-prepared / defrosted pieces of fish - which is a massive let down given how close the place is to the beach. The chips must have come from another frozen packet - again a tasteless waste of time and money.

The bruschetta looked ok and our friend seemed relatively happy. Just to make us even happier the place gave us over ₤5 back in loose change (20p, etc)...Do yourself and your pocket a favour and give this place a big miss!!

We stumbled upon this restaurant during Christmas 07 and were so happy with the food and service, we went there again last weekend. A perfect experience again! The staff were friendly, not overly attentive and the ambiance was relaxing and comfortable. We both had steaks and these were served exactly as we requested. We will definitely be returning there on our next jaunt to Brighton!

I am always heading down to Brighton to see my friends at university. Every time we are down we always find time to go and have one of their breakfast after our heavy nights out!

Great place to eat, the staff are awesome as well! Really accomodating and aren't intrusive at all.

The breakfast's are always perfect as well! A good size and a good price.

Really recomMend this place.

The House is a fiasco of a restaurant. I read on its website that it 'prefers to let the food do the talking'. This is unfortunate on many levels. Because our order 'got lost' - these things happen - we'd polished off a bottle of wine before the starters arrived after 1 hour 20 minutes. I was so famished but the baked mussels were worse, so chewy as to render them indigestible. I had to change my main course order quickly because the sirloin I'd ordered had been given to someone else during the order loss and stupidly opted for a southern style chicken dish. It was seemingly inspired by the output of the LIttle Chef franchise. This brought back British restaurants of old, before people valued good produce and cooking skills. The staff are sweet and the building is nice but unless they can sort out the food, they should just turn it into a bar. And all the stuff about offering 'global cuisine'? Time to stop pretending.

We ate at The House on Saturday afternoon for a quick , unplanned lunch.

It was very cold and I just wanted to get inside somewhere quickly!

I chose from their lunchtime menu and had the pork goulash with steamed rice, my boyfriend ordered the lasagne.

The goulash was absolutely delicious, melt in the mouth pork and a generous portion. The lasagne was huge, undeniably homemade and warmed us both up.

We were sat downstairs by the window, and it was a lovely quaint place.

We visited thiis restaurant on a busy Saturday night and we were initillay impressed by our surroundings and the ambience.

This was short lived. Our starters were mediocre, no one checked if we were happy with them. It was then over an hour before our mains arrived during which time at least three tables walked out and one table sent food back. When our mains did arrive my medium rare steak was more like well done but after waiting over an hour for it, and seeing the problem another table had when sending a steak back, i just made do. Service was awful, no apologies., poor selection of wine and very very average food!

Very disappointing!!!!
