The House
your comments review this restaurant
The House is a fiasco of a restaurant. I read on its website that it 'prefers to let the food do the talking'. This is unfortunate on many levels. Because our order 'got lost' - these things happen - we'd polished off a bottle of wine before the starters arrived after 1 hour 20 minutes. I was so famished but the baked mussels were worse, so chewy as to render them indigestible. I had to change my main course order quickly because the sirloin I'd ordered had been given to someone else during the order loss and stupidly opted for a southern style chicken dish. It was seemingly inspired by the output of the LIttle Chef franchise. This brought back British restaurants of old, before people valued good produce and cooking skills. The staff are sweet and the building is nice but unless they can sort out the food, they should just turn it into a bar. And all the stuff about offering 'global cuisine'? Time to stop pretending.

We ate at The House on Saturday afternoon for a quick , unplanned lunch.
It was very cold and I just wanted to get inside somewhere quickly!
I chose from their lunchtime menu and had the pork goulash with steamed rice, my boyfriend ordered the lasagne.
The goulash was absolutely delicious, melt in the mouth pork and a generous portion. The lasagne was huge, undeniably homemade and warmed us both up.
We were sat downstairs by the window, and it was a lovely quaint place.

We visited thiis restaurant on a busy Saturday night and we were initillay impressed by our surroundings and the ambience.
This was short lived. Our starters were mediocre, no one checked if we were happy with them. It was then over an hour before our mains arrived during which time at least three tables walked out and one table sent food back. When our mains did arrive my medium rare steak was more like well done but after waiting over an hour for it, and seeing the problem another table had when sending a steak back, i just made do. Service was awful, no apologies., poor selection of wine and very very average food!
Very disappointing!!!!

We celebated our 5th wedding anniversary here last night and it was fantastic, we really feel like we made a great find in this restaurant, it is nice that even though we have lived in Brighton for over 7 years it still has little gems like this place to surprise us with. The steaks were fab, the service was great, we got a free shot of grappa as we were celebrating. If you only pick one restaurant to try in the rest of 2007 give this one ago.

I went to The House for my birthday on 27th May. We had a lovely meal, there was 11 of us, and we had our own private room. I was unaware of the free birthday meal prior to attending so had no proof of my date of birth, but kindly the restaurant gave me it for free anyway. The waitress was very helpful and attentive. Everyones food was delicious, I can definately recommend the Sea Bass and the peppered steak. We will definately be going back there next time we visit Brighton.

Give this place a miss. The service wasn't awful but the food certainly was. The pork loin definately wasn't loin and was greasy and served in a horrible batter. The chips were undercooked and hard in places and the pizza was floppy and greasy. The pork left a nasty taste in the mouth and this restaurant is one to avoid.

I just missed out on the birthday offer because I brought my birthday bash a bit earlier (Friday 06 October) but they gave me a free shot of a really nice liqueur to get me on my way!! I had a lovely time!
The building and setting was really fun and quirky! It was like finding a treasure in this town! The restaurant looked like as if it had been open all day and it was full of lifeand buzzing!
The waitress was really attentive and as we were sat on the 1st floor, she had to keep coming upstairs and checking up on us.
The food came on huge plates but that meant a good quantity of food!!! There was seven of us, we had 2 bottles of wine red & white) a few starters as nibbles, mains, few desserts and coffees and all came to approximatley £25 per head.
Fantastic!!! Couldn't ask for more!!!
OH by the way I did try to see if I could get a cancellation to The Gingerman. Because I did have my heart set on that place before I came to Brighton but I didn't get in but I checked it out to see if it lived up to my expectation. Err... "SET MENU" (ONLY) and it was pants!!! It is so overated and bit far out from the main road and attractions!!!

Excellent food excellent service.
Hidden up an alley in the lanes in Brighton we were recommended this place by friends as they said the food was really tasty and very good value for money. I couldn't agree more. It was well worth finding. The staff were very friendly, attentive but not OTT. It's a far cry from all the hum drum well lit and clinical modern restaurnts that dominate Brighton's streets but has a lovely warm, cosy and different feel to it. If you fancy a change of scene try this one out as if your like me I'm fed up of paying over the top for not top notch. Cheers.

This is a little gem. I ate there this weekend with a goup of friends for my birthday and had a great night. My meal was free because it was my birthday and this is their offer. Great fun and lovely food. I had their special House Tapas which was really delicious and a fillet
steak rossini. It was yum. I will definitely return to this unique, quirky little restaurant again very soon...

This is the worst restaurant we have ever been to in our whole lives. We are finacially challenged students who were unfortunate enough to of stumbled into this monstrosity of a restaurant. After waiting for 70 mins for our food and two jugs of hardly alcoholic pims later we were served over cooked, mediocre food, minus any garlic bread that was promised. we left starving and had to get a take-away pizza on the way home! Over priced and under fed, stay away or at the very least bring a snack with you!
