Have been here many times and I can honestly say, the food and service has been beyond reproach. Only down side is the very dated decor (tartan wallpaper ? Come on !). The menu is very "Berni Inn" (remenber them ?) but all cooked perfectly. Simple food done well, what more can you ask for ?

old fashioned - yes - but a pleasant attentive staff - the cashier was a pleasure to talk to - and she made our evening - by making sure the waiter cleared our plates when finished and came and asked us if all was okay - which it was - the only unpleasant moment - was the chef shouting at what i take to be his helper - sounding of like that in front of customers kind of spoiled the atmosphere for us.

such a pity as the ambience was one of relaxation - up until then.-even on a busy saturday evening.

Steak and fish was our choice and although the chips were a disappointment the steak itself - being best scottish produce was excellent..

Ok, so I was looking for somewhere to eat a steak in...a big steak so I plumpted for this place.

I read the reviews etc and thought I'd made an informed choice...oops

I'll say now that I'm not a critic, nor am I picky or fussy or out to get anyone, I haven't got a chip on my shoulder and my criticism of this place is completely without bias.

The steak was great btw, but that was the only good thing and even that was flawed!

When my girlfriend and I arrived we were seated, we ordered 2 x pints of lager shandy, hers turned up fine, mine turned up with 1 inch of foam in the glass, the glasses were also of a diferent shape.

Placed the order for rump steak, one medium, one well done. My well done steak turned up 'just' medium, in fact my girlfriends one was cooked more yet well done was just a prefference anyway and I ate it and it was great, lovely steak. The chips were dry and overcooked and the only extra thing on my plate was a 2 inch square piece of lettuce and two slices of tomatoe.

The price was silly, fair enough £15 for a steak and chips was average but add £3 each for some peppercorn sauce and then £4.50 service charge and it brought the total to £45 for 2 pints of shandy and 2 x 12oz steak and chips.

This is why I don't eat out as much as I used to, I should of gone to M&S, spent half as much and had the satisfaction of doing it myself. Sure, some reviewers on here might said I'm moaning but why take the risk when it's costs so much!

Decor was ok, I was there to eat and look at my girls eyes not the wallpaper.

I won't go there again, not because of the food but the cost.

This restaurant was absolutely great. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and the steak was out of this world and cooked to perfection. My husband is so hard to please when it comes to steak but he had no complaints and can't wait to go back there, which we will next time we're in Brighton. It was great value for money too.

After having a bad experience at dig in the ribs last week (19/7/7) I was hoping that another management-take-over would spoil this long serving restaurant credibility of fine food, especially the T-bone steaks,fillets....etc. Oh and with joy it was spot on as we used to have it.The old chef is still there showing the ropes, and so is one of the waiters who usually makes the sauces in the middle of the restaurant. And its so nice to be greeted with respect as a long serving customers to the restaurant,20 years. The steaks was cooked to perfection and such friendly service. After paying over two hundred and thirty pounds at 'dig in the ribs' for a pile of rubbish, there was no need to look at the bill as it was presented to me as my wife and me was quite content. And it pleased me lots when the waiter presented my wife with a flower to go home with, and it just gives the whole evening that romantic feeling of an enjoyable night, top stuff.

Excellent steaks, perfectly cooked to order. The menu is retro 'prawn cocktail years' fare - but all the better for that as its perfectly done. Step back in time and enjoy prawn cocktail, steak & chips, homemade creme caramel. Not cheap compared to 'going for a pizza' but highly recommended.

This is my favorite restaurants in Brighton. It is not a tourist trap what so ever, I have lived in the city for a year and go atleast a couple times a month. If you want the absolute best, be ready to spend a little more and get the filet mignon. It is delicious. Also, dont forget to order chips or veggie. They use garlic butter which is to die for. You get to watch them prepare your food in front of you, and although it might take a while, it is more than worth the wait. Just remember to always make a reservation even if its in the middle of the week.

I try to go every month for the best steak in Brighton,at least I haven't found any better!

The only improvement they could make is to serve proper chips and not the pre-frozen macdonald type. The fried onions are also excellent!

If you don't agree to the service charge don't pay it, it's that simple?

Very nice food. It has recently changed ownership so hopefully the food will remain the same quality. Very nice but quite expensive if you want a nice steak. The only thing that really really gets me is the service charge that they add on top of your bill. It should be your choice whether you want to tip or not. I wish i had a list of all Brighton and Hove restaurants that do not apply bl**dy service charges. It is ridicilous.
