We ate here after receiving a dinner voucher for a gift. We had the 6 course tasting menu. I was 9 months pregnant at the time of the visit, meaning that that I had some special dietry requirements and some items such as alcohol, pâté and raw eggs were off the menu. I did inform the waiter of this fact upon arrival.
While the waiter asked my partner if he wanted a drink, and a bottle of water was brought to our table, he failed to ask if I wanted anything to drink other than this and eventually bored of waiting I had to summon him to ask for an orange juice.
The first course of a veg soup was lovely but was served in clear tall coffee glasses which seemed a bit pretentious and made it a bit more difficult to get a spoon in as they were quite narrow down the bottom. Second course was fois grois with dry toast, which the waiter and chef clearly forgot my initial warning about no pâté. I had to have the waiter take it back to the kitchen. It took him a while after returning to tell me that the chef would be making me a salad instead. When I asked for some butter for the dry toast he brought some but informed me that the chef was really insulted that I wanted butter. Im completely baffled by this comment and also found it completely unnecessary. The waiter was generally uptight and prissy and each time he brought out the next course was sarcastically asking if I was ok to eat it, (even the sorbet palate cleanser!). We had a fish and saffron rice dish which was really lovely as well as rack of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes. Dessert was a beautifully rich chocolate mousse.
While the food was very nice and I would go back again for this, I found the waiter to be generally a bit rude with a number of comments made about the changes that had to be made for me, which was unneccessary and made each encounter with him quite uncomfortable. Other than this the restaurant was also decorated very nicely, though the chef and the waiter need to get over themselves.

Lets start with the good bits, as that shouldn't take too long. The staff were friendly and the setting was nice.
Now for the food. This was not good. This restaurant is clearly tyring to deliver a menu that's way out of it's league. I'm not sure who cooked our dinner, but I can not believe it was a qualified chef. My mum could do better. The quality of the produce was dreadful. I had beef carpaccio to start. This was clearly straight out of a packet and completely tasteless. It was drowned in olive oil (the only thing I could taste) and then sprinkled with a few pieces of Parmesan - which again was tasteless and dry (think cardboard).
My main was a wafer thin piece of fatty sirloin steak, served with fries and cup of garlic butter.
My dad had foie gras, followed by fishcakes. His selection was slight more tasty than mine, but still looked like it had been prepared by a 5-year-old.
In summary - the quality of the produce is not up to scratch and the kitchen staff should be working in a cafe.

We tried the New Steine on the off chance as we live round the corner.
The daily menu offered at £14.50 for 3 courses was really good value for money the local reared rack of lamb was superb and their banana and pear tatin was just delicious. The place is small and intimate the service was good and discreet.
We will definately go back.

Food at the Steine Bistro is great - have eaten there 3 times in total and have never had a bad meal or bad experience - the food is tasty and the staff great - not bad pricing either though only a small place so they fill up easily - would definately recommend

Having read the reviews already posted I was hesitant to try this our, but friends highly recommended it and they were not mistaken - my partner and I went there with two other friends and had a fabulous time - the place is small and intimate, and though we are not the most romantic of couples, we did not feel out of place. The staff were attentive and the Restaurant Manager, Stephane, kept us laughing throughout the evening without being too intrusive. As for the food, two of us ate off the daily special menus and two from the a la carte - both offered a great selection and as one of our party was a vegetarian with some allergies, Stephane could not have been more helpful in recommending dishes and sorting out special options for our friend. When the food came it was fabulous - the Steak I had was cooked exactly as I requested, and the French twist on all the items really added to the quality. We even splashed out on some cappuchinio ice-creams and latte coffees before we headed off - well done New Steine Bistro!

Very dissapointing!
The waiting staff and chefs seem to have trained in very different restaurants. The waiting staff were attentive and polite but the food was pitiful.
All of our starters (Salmon & Spinach Tart) were burnt and full of grit, presumably eggshell. I would not even consider serving the dish in my own home!
With only 3 options on the main menu, they had run out of Steak at 8pm and there were only 4 other people in the restaurant. I can only assume they were not expecting much business! Now I know why.

i went with my partner last night and there was nobody in the place, the 2 members of staff ,if you can call staff, was just not concentrate of us ,we wait 15 minutes to having maybe a menu to have look ,and finally the waiter ,for me not very professionnal at all, take the wine order and on the same time some guest came into the room for the hotel and waiting for the wine we asked, that guy bring the guests upstairs throw the bedroom,so we just decide to get back our coats ,but the girl not at all surprise about us to leave just say ,ok no problem, honestly the day i booked after all i wasnt sure of myself because when you asked a member of staff i presume doesnt speak english so much, she just give me a piece of paper to write on there my details,is how you taking a booking ,not really, this is the second place in that corner we decide to not doing any publicity at all,and by the way im french ,and i very disapointing about that place, because they do a massive advert on gscene, but nothing right, sorry im not giving my money to this kind of place, start giving some training to your staff and then you can run a business.
