We've moved to Brighton from the USA, and The Saint has become one of our favorite dining spots. The foods is always fabulous and imaginatively prepared; the bread is other-worldly good. The layout of the restaurant and staffing sometimes makes service a little slow, but they're usually apologetic -- and the food is worth the waiting.

We went to the Saint for lunch on a Friday in May 2006. Including ours, there were only two tables occupied. The food was pleasant enough, although my partner was brought the wrong main course and there is little choice for vegetarians like myself. Prices are hardly cheap - £60 for a meal for two with one bottle of house wine.

The real fun started a few weeks later, when I noticed on my bank statement that they had charged me twice. I phoned many times over the next few days, and left several messages about what had happened, which I saw as an honest mistake, but nobody called me back. After about four days, I managed to get hold of someone, who told me to come down to the restaraunt with my receipt and my debit card. I asked if I could be refunded without going to the restaurant, as it was inconvenient for me, and was told that my card would need to be swiped.

I went down the next day, expecting to receive a big apology for charging me twice and not returning my calls, and I produced my receipt and card. After some deliberation, I was asked if I had my bank statement with me. I said that I didn't, and that I would have brought it had I been asked to. I told the guy to check the restaurant's bank statement if he didn't believe me, which he said he couldn't do, because it was in the post office (?!?). Extremely reluctantly, the guy refunded my card, all the while acting like I was ripping him off. When I thanked him, he blanked me! I couldn't believe it! Although I had been polite throughout, instead of an apology I got a guy being very rude to me and behaving like a sulky child.

Frankly, I have never experienced such lousy customer service in my life, and I would advise anyone thinking of eating here to give it a miss. There are many great restaurants in Brighton - this isn't one of them.

Although I have not eaten here in a while, I have enjoyed both the lunch and evening menu's. Really nice food, and top top vino.

I must go back soon!

Well worth a visit

Saint is excellent but has slipped a tad recently as the simple bed of mash and one other veg, has become a collection of everything that they can find in the kitchen. It was always the less is more principle at Saint that evolved from the skinny days of Haut Cuisine that made it so enjoyable although their portions were never skimped. That said the starter has got a bit smaller lately, plus the two course lunch has gone up a couple of quid. Although still good value, be careful however, as three of us had the set lunch in February and I paid well over £200!

Many restaurateurs on the Cote D’Azur would do well to spend a week in Saint, they’d learn much about presentation and variety.
