Excellent Restaurant overall, we had the "speciality" lamb shoulder with couscous, apart from the lamb portion being enough for 4 people while have a couscous portion not enough for one person it was great.
We had the belly dancer coming on the day we came, and they tried to make a musical entrance for her while ended in the most funny way by having the CD stuck because it was dirty! we and all the diners had a good laugh when the waiter started techno dancing instead.
Regarding the prices, they are a bit steep, but from sunday to thursday it is for 15£ ( the days when the dancer doesn't come) which is quite good.
overall, the restaurant is excellent, the only problem you might have as one reiewer said is the problem with the seating which is designed around average height slim people.

Absolutely disgusting, with the exception of the starter of greasy pigeon samosa, which was fairly good it was all horrible, and the waiter became very aggressive when we suggested a discount because we couldn't eat the vile couscous and grotesque confit. We actually felt scared towards the end.

welcome was very good, as was service overall. belly dancer was a novelty. set menu was varied, other than 2 choices of duck & both served with mash ! calamari was EXCELLENT & lamb shank tagines melted in the mouth. good venue for group parties due to the novelty factor. low chairs a little challnging for diners with long legs. set menu price of £21 for 2 courses maybe a little expensive & probably due to paying the belly dancer her fees for the night.
would go back again & would recommend to friends.

This is has to be the best I have ever been. I travel a lot and as part of my profession I eat out a lot. Somehow I felt very comfortable in mascara. Food was fantastic, atmosphre undiscribable and service next to none.

Fantastic. the restauarant opened especially for us last Monday night for our son's birthday, we felt so guilty that the appalling weather meant that additional business was almost none existent. The atmosphere was cosy, the service was impeccable, the food had all the presentation of nouvelle cuisine but as it was served on flying saucer sized plates the portions sizes were excellent, as was the quality. They were happy to bring our own birthday cake to the table with full ceremony ( a very poor offering in comparison to everything else we had eaten that evening!!)The biggest surprise was the price. For six of us the entire food and drink bill, including a very palatable bottle of champagne came to less than £135. You would be mad not to give this place a try. My son is a Brighton resident and wished that he had tried it earlier. Return visits are definitely on the cards.

My partner and I visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening. First impressions were good, the guy working front of house came straight over and gave us the choice of tables.
The atmosphere was lovely, a great size restaurant seating 40 max I'd say. The decor was also great, authentic north African, making you feel as though you were sitting in one of Marrakech's riads.
The menu was intriguing to say the least, but well explained by the waiting staff. My partner opted for a pigeon starter which we thoroughly enjoyed and the rest of the meal was of equally high standard.
We both had an aperitif, starter, main, dessert and a bottle of house wine and were more than pleasantly suprised when the bill came to £65.
We would definitely visit Mascara again based on food, ambience, great staff and value for money.

My HB and I had actually planned on trying out a different restaurant the night we ended up at Mascara, but the original option was closed for refurbishments. I'm glad it was. We had a superb evening. The food was faultless, the service excellent and the atmosphere fantastic. The only down side is that we a re both quite tall and the tables are very low! Having said that we will be going back...very soon.
